The Real Dirtiness in NZ Politics

[Published in this month's Capital Magazine—believe it or not at their instigation! They have printed every word I wrote, as I wrote it, aside from their putting my "gutless in thrall to the clueless" line inside the Mike Moore quote. I am agreeably astonished. Is the blacklist finally at an end?]

Why Greg Sandow Cried

Lindsay Perigo's picture
Submitted by Lindsay Perigo on Tue, 2014-09-16 04:01

Greg Sandow, music critic and Juilliard teacher, cried a few months ago when he watched The Great Caruso. I cried when I read his article about it just now.

"Lanza, Hollywood or not, is, with no caveats, one of the very greatest — most powerful, most passionate, most communicative, most thrilling, most idiomatic, most faithful to the words, most vocally splendid — Italian tenors who ever lived. Soars up to high C like he’s thrilling with joy on a big drop on a roller coaster."

Why IS *is* an IS

Have a listen again to what Barack Obama had to say on Wednesday in his address that outlined his strategy to deal with the threat that was originally "The Organization of Monotheism and Jihad", which came to be known as "Al Qaeda in Iraq", and more recently "ISIL", then "ISIS", and now the "Islamic State", its latest iteration:

Last Summer I invited some old school friends back to my parents’ home in Christchurch. We swam in the heated swimming pool, relaxed in the spa, watched a movie in the home theatre, listened to music over the in-ceiling speaker system, and enjoyed many a glass of good gin.

August 20, 2014 -- Zoltan Istvan, author of the provocative novel The Transhumanist Wager(I’ll review it soon), recently suggested in Wired that individuals be required to secure a government license before having a child. I disagree with Istvan.

Stability over Insanity in Iraq...Yeah, Right.

Before 2003, when Saddam Hussein tyrannized Iraq with his secret police, torture chambers and death squads, many, if not most in the west, claimed that he was still the best man for the job “because he kept stability in the region”.

Comets in Our Twilight: Licia Albanese, RIP

Lindsay Perigo's picture
Submitted by Lindsay Perigo on Fri, 2014-06-27 08:25

Metropolitan Opera Grande Diva Licia Albanese will turn 101 next month. She appeared with Mario in the 1955 Warner Bros movie Serenade. In 1995 she and I were both in Philadelphia to attend the annual Mario Lanza Ball, where she performed a stellar, impromptu rendering of Star-Spangled Banner. A day prior to the Ball I recorded this interview with her. My thanks to Gregster for uploading and matching pics to audio:

Edit, August 17: Licia passed away yesterday. Her age is given here as 105, not 101. Either way, I think we can safely say she lived a life as long as it was excellent:

Intro to 'Total Passion'

Lindsay Perigo's picture
Submitted by Lindsay Perigo on Sat, 2014-06-14 23:05

Kyrel Zantonavitch's new review on Amazon of my book, 'Total Passion for the Total Height,' prompted me to start re-reading the thing myself. As I made my way through the Introduction I became quite exercised by the trenchant accuracy of my own observations, and motivated to lift myself from the pessimistic funk induced by the horrors of which I write. It occurred to me that I'd never published that Introduction here. Here it is (oh, and of course, buy the book if you want more!):

"In the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.

I am going to keep this thread permanently blue-stickied, like Marcus's Global Warming thread, Philip Duck's UN thread, etc. It will serve as a repository for exhibits in my case that America has now become Airhead America indisputably—comprachicoed, cretinized, lobotomized, infantilized, collectivized, Slayerized, zombified, pomofied, Gramscified, Alinskyfied and generally filthified beyond recognition (from the Founding Fathers' Republic) and beyond salvation. It is not a cliff that America hovers atop; it is the abyss.
