The Life of Thomas Paine: Radical Revolutionary

If ever there was a man who could be deemed worthy of remembrance for his radical commitments to the cause of human freedom, Thomas Paine would be that man.

Born to a Quaker family of Thetford, England, in 1737, Paine played a crucial part in the American Revolution of 1776 and the French Revolution of 1789, after his popular pamphlets Common Sense and The American Crisis swept through the Western worlds, both new and old, placing before the public eye in simple, yet dramatic terms, the virtues of self-government and individual liberty.

If only television satire shows existed in NZ, as they once did, it would make the world of politics less absurd. Having a collective laugh is a great antidote to the serious nonsense that politics throws in our faces everyday. In fact, it’s probably the only antidote.

Nobody could forget the inherent vindictiveness of the female villain in the 90’s movie Fatal Attraction – the proverbial woman scorned played impeccably by actress Glenn Close. The adulterous protagonist, who eventually rejects her advances after “knowing her” in the biblical sense, comes home one day to find his daughter’s beloved pet rabbit boiling on the kitchen stove.

As the chaotic madness of WWII drew to an end, the victorious heads of the Allied Powers, Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt and Josef Stalin, met to restructure the future of the world at the Yalta Conference of February 1945. This resulted in the ‘Declaration of Liberated Europe’, where it was pledged “the earliest possible establishment through free elections, governments responsive to the will of the people.”

Danielle McLaughlin - NZ’s Fake-News Writeress in Chief

US news correspondent and political commentator, Danielle McLaughlin, a left-wing Kiwi living in the United States, used her writing and speaking skills to support Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election.

More often than not, McLaughlin parrots tabloid news stories which are very light on facts and heavy on psychodrama. Rather than writing columns which could provide a unique or insightful angle, perhaps even with a hint of intellectual prowess, McLaughlin instead panders to the poll-governed herd mentality by only peddling regurgitated ‘fake-news’ – and media outlets such as NZ’s Sunday Star Times continually lap it up.

I have a lot of friends in the Baby Boomer generational set even though I’m from Generation X.

Well into a pretty comfortable retirement, many Boomers now often talk about the world as if the political/cultural battles of their youth had never been victorious, ie civil rights, women’s lib, gender equity, gay rights and the consciousness revolution.

These battles that once defined the Boomer generation were soundly won and the institutions they managed to influence over the last 30 years incorporated their value systems hook, line and sinker.

On the United Nations official website, under the label of “What We Do,” the Organisation claims to be committed to four major objectives on this globe, the second of which is proudly described thus:

PROTECT HUMAN RIGHTS
The term “human rights” was mentioned seven times in the UN's founding Charter, making the promotion and protection of human rights a key purpose and guiding principle of the Organization. In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights brought human rights into the realm of international law. Since then, the Organization has diligently protected human rights through legal instruments and on-the-ground activities.

Most people like the traits of self-confidence, tolerance and a fair mind. But when a prime minister consistently styles her public life and messaging in the fashion of a woman’s weekly magazine, one is left thinking how shameful it is that these traits are not being employed to serve worthier causes than meaningless emotional ejaculations.

The Christian-right and the secular-right may yet find themselves uniting upon the foundation of the greatest values ever created by mankind: liberty, freedom of religion and the right to pursue individual happiness as a moral imperative.

I think the thing that I find most heartening about the debacle between Rugby Australia and Israel Folau over the latter’s warnings about hell awaiting unrepentant sinners, is that it has become so rare to ever see Christians really stand up for their faith in this day and age.

Our current Minister of Justice Andrew Little, wrote a very cunningly crafted article for the NZ Herald recently titled: Hate speech threatens our right to freedom of speech.

Note how the title is designed to appease we freedom of speech absolutists, by stating what we have been saying all along. This is of course, the absolute problem with introducing hate speech laws into New Zealand, a problem which, as it happens, Little himself is seeking to impose on us.

Looking back from an epoch that is sure to be noted in history as an unprecedented time of luxurious peace and prosperity, it is difficult to imagine what it must have been like for a generation which entered its adulthood during the era of WWI.

Those of this generation who survived the ‘Great War to End all Wars’ would also experience the indiscriminate culling of populations by the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918, which took more lives than had been lost in the war itself. The Lost generation would go on to see the stock-market crash of ’29 and live through the subsequent Great Depression, then witness the unspeakable horrors of WWII just as they crossed into their jaded middle-age.

Trump Delivers the Antidote to the Toxic Left

Olivia's picture
Submitted by Olivia on Wed, 2019-02-13 05:25

The only antidote to the left’s toxic hatred of Western culture is for lovers of liberty to keep extolling the virtues of our civilisation and always renew our pride in them.

In his State of the Union address today, President Trump administered this antidote with the skill of a cultural physician – and the cultural nihilists of the left squirmed uncomfortably in their seats (especially Nancy Pelosi, who seemed to have a distressing problem with her dentures again). https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

President Trump’s address could only ever have been delivered by a powerful Western man who oozes the confidence that only comes from knowing that what one is confident in, is the very best thing to be confident about. It’s not a lie, a fudge, or an exaggeration, no sir. It’s the real thing, the genuine article, better than Coke and Levi's.

Because I follow politics in a lot more detail than my friend does, I pointed out that she is projecting her own sense of decency onto the left, and that they are in fact infernally vicious and thick - and they assume everyone else is as vicious and as thick as they are. She thought I was being “a tad too harsh” on them. As she topped up my wine glass, I replied that I knew them better than she did.
