In 1858, when Abraham Lincoln accepted the nomination to run against the Democrat Stephen Douglas for Illinois State Senator (a race which Lincoln lost), he gave his famous “House Divided” speech drawing on a biblical metaphor to illustrate the most pressing moral and economic issue facing his country at the time - black slavery.

In C.S Lewis’ artful little book titled, The Screwtape Letters, Uncle Screwtape is the older, more experienced demon who advises in letter form his young, impetuous nephew, Wormwood, on the finer points of how to win “the patient’s” soul toward hell and our Father Below. Uncle Screwtape instructs Wormwood, “the safest road to hell is the gradual one - the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts."

The night before last, we went to the best concert of our lives so far.  The glorious Russian soprano, Anna Netrebko - deservedly the toast of Europe’s classical world - sang us some ravishing opera highlights. She was accompanied by her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov, the star baritone Elchin Avazov and the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra. What a night!  What a programme!

When Aristotle, the ancient Athenian philosopher, devised his systems of logic and metaphysics (the study of the nature of reality), he taught that all entities, be they animal, vegetable or mineral, had a distinct identity or nature (essence) and could only ever be or act according to that nature. This became the famous Law of Identity: a thing is itself, formulaically symbolised as ‘A is A’.

One of my bug-bears is how much feminism has messed with the heads of modern females - to the point where they have shot themselves in the foot so severely that it’s created an ugly limp in what ought to be a woman’s confident stride. What makes this limp a travesty is that I am talking about women who have been thoroughly ‘emancipated’.

When I consider that all world leaders in their different eras get handed complex problems not of their own creation - Lincoln and the scourge of black slavery, say, or Churchill with the outbreak of the Second World War - I’m tempted to shrug and just conclude that it comes with the job. But then I remember that these great leaders of the past never had to confront a foe where a nuclear attack on themselves or a close ally may be the result of their actions.

No civilisation in human history has done more for the daily lives of men, women and children than Western culture has since the time of the 17th Century European Enlightenment. Due to its intense focus on individual liberty and the resulting attainments in science, medicine, law and technological innovation, the great lodestar of Western culture has burned fiercely for the cause of human flourishing.

I have learned with the New Zealand media, that whenever a story gets sprayed out in a one-sided fashion from almost every single media orifice known to man, it is monumentally out of sync with the facts and an attempt at propaganda; eg -“Donald Trump is just a buffoon and could never win the Presidency,” or, “It would be a total economic disaster for the UK if they vote to exit the EU,” and the more recent, “New Zealand is suffering from an embedded rape culture.”

So now this contentious 2016 presidential election has turned terribly comical. Trump is being slaughtered in the press over a lewd leaked tape by the puritanical mob who likes to pretend that men are not attracted to the physical anatomy of women. What planet is this? Obviously one in which we are not ever allowed to acknowledge the power of Darwin’s Sexual Selection. I guess this is what you get when a secular Deist joins forces with the Christian Right in a feminist post-modern culture.
