Free Radical Schedule

Lindsay Perigo's picture
Submitted by Lindsay Perigo on Thu, 2006-06-01 03:25

In accordance with what had become the FreeRad's quarterly schedule, Issue 71 would normally have been out around now. But we've been working through some technical production issues, making some changes, and regrouping. Issue 71 will now shock the world on July 1, and we'll revert to a bi-monthly schedule thereafter, meaning there'll be six issues each year, and three more this year—July/August, September/October, November/December. Guest editor for Issue 71 will be my KASS colleague Peter Cresswell, while I gird my loins for my expedition to California and my Valliant book-signing presentation. If you'd like to submit something to Peter for publication, send it to him at organon@ihug.co.nz.

To which I replied:

My understanding was that my webmasters were indeed working on this issue with you - they were reporting frustration to me in their efforts to get the necessary information. But please be assured we want to resolve the matter as soon as possible & restore the site immediately.

An Early Victory?

On my Sunday radio show I read out an item from that day's Sunday Star-Times quoting Green MP Sue Kedgley, chair-thing of Parliament's Health Select Committee, saying she would welcome a ban on the promotional toys given away by McDonald's in association with their Happy Meals (& by implication, a ban on the meals themselves). I railed about this for four hours, along with most of my callers. I urged them & all listeners to e-mail Kedgley, along with National MP Jackie Blue who said the idea was worth considering, letting her know what they thought of her nutri-nazism. Several listeners forwarded to me the replies they received from Kedgley. I e-mailed her myself. The exchange is below, her reply at the top:

Objectivists Reeling!

Lindsay Perigo's picture
Submitted by Lindsay Perigo on Sat, 2006-04-01 04:33

A series of bizarre incidents has rocked the Objectivist movement overnight, causing a run on counselling books by renowned neo-Objectivist therapist Nathaniel Branden. Dr. Branden has responded by raising the price of his works to $10,000 each, nearly as much as he's believed to charge California's feeble-minded therapy addicts for a one-hour personal fix. When accused, by one frustrated would-be book-purchaser, of "price-gouging," Dr. Branden, aka "Dr." Branden, replied, "Eat shit, dickhead."

The crisis was triggered by the sudden confession by Ayn Rand biographer Barbara Branden that she has made mistakes. Ms. Branden has insisted in the past that she has never made a mistake. Those who say she has made mistakes, she has claimed repeatedly, are angry alcoholics. Now, Ms. Branden has stepped forward to say she was mistaken about never being mistaken. Speaking on the website ObjectivistLying.com, Ms. Branden said, "In painting a picture of Frank O'Connor as an alcoholic, I made an egregious error. The error consisted in my not pointing out that Ayn Rand was an alcoholic too. ('Ayn the Alky' we used to call her.) I left it for my readers to infer that from the fact that she was angry all the time, but I should have spelled it out. I can only apologise to my readers for the years of deception I have been responsible for in this matter. Oh, and while I'm about it, it goes without saying that Leonard Peikoff is an alcoholic also. 'Lenny the Lush' we used to call him." When it was pointed out that she had presented no evidence of Dr. Peikoff's alcoholism, Ms. Branden retorted (angrily), "When has that ever stopped me? Furthermore, on this occasion I do have evidence, and I am its source. I saw Leonard once. He was angry AND he had a drink in his hand. There! Ha! Case closed, you raging pisshead!"

EMBARGOED UNTIL: APRIL 1 2006

MEDIA RELEASE New NZ Standard on Lift etiquette

Standards New Zealand has initiated a new Standard to govern the way in which people behave in and around lifts. The Standard will specify appropriate queuing behaviour, right-of-way rules for those exiting and entering lifts, and - most importantly - define appropriate behaviour when actually travelling in lifts.

"Standards NZ has become aware of concerns amongst the general public about an increasing tendency for rudeness that seems to be triggered by close proximity to lifts," says Rob Steele, Chief Executive at Standards NZ.

TOC: Bill Perry "Retires"

Lindsay Perigo's picture
Submitted by Lindsay Perigo on Tue, 2006-03-14 21:22

TOC has officially confirmed Bill Perry's departure with the following announcement:

___________________________

"Bill Perry, The Objectivist Center's director of community relations, is retiring and returning to Arizona.

"After a career as a prosecutor in Arizona, where his family lives, and after trips to our Summer Seminars, Bill retired not to a life of leisure but, rather, to Poughkeepsie, New York to work for us for a while. He started with us in March 2004 and when the Center moved to D.C., Bill agreed to serve another year before really retiring.

"He has been a great help in the transition and in creating a well-organized system for fundraising and keeping in touch with our members. For example, Bill produced the Logbooks that are sent out ten times a year and organized the sponsors' dinner at the Summer Seminars. He even found time to do a fine seminar talk in 2005 on Ortega y Gasset, the Spanish philosopher on whom Ayn Rand in part modeled Dr. Huge Akston in Atlas Shrugged.

ARI Launches Free Speech Campaign

Lindsay Perigo's picture
Submitted by Lindsay Perigo on Wed, 2006-03-08 04:45

(Note from Linz—no, I haven't joined ARI, but this project seems well worth supporting, & is another instance of ARI leaving TOC in the dust.)

In light of the recent violent outrage in the Islamic world over the "Danish Cartoon" controversy, and the anemic response to this outburst in Europe and America, the Ayn Rand Institute is pleased to announce a campaign to bring the Danish cartoons to the widest possible audience--and to arrange a series of panel discussions to discuss the vital need to defend free speech.

So long as men are free to criticize, free to dissent, free to present their own ideas without fear of reprisals--the fight for rational culture has a chance. But the crisis over cartoons of Mohammad threatens to wipe out freedom of speech. Our leaders have shamefully sided with the mobs chanting death threats and torching embassies. Free speech, our leaders say, is not an absolute, its exercise must not offend religious beliefs--it is a right, in other words, that we are not free to exercise.

Monthly Update—March 1

Lindsay Perigo's picture
Submitted by Lindsay Perigo on Wed, 2006-03-01 04:17

I’m really excited about the first announcement I have to make in this monthly update.

*Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new Executive Director. It’s … (drum roll, please) … Jason Quintana. I proposed, and he accepted. By way of explaining why I picked him, I can do no better than quote from my note to him:

"Thing is, Jason, I need an Executive Director. I'm offering you the job. My job is not to *run* SOLO. It's to provide the over-arching vision, the broad brush-strokes. The whole point of having staff is to let *them* run the thing, *implement* the vision. I've been waiting for a successor to Joe to become apparent. I gave Joe carte blanche to run SOLO as he saw fit, subject only to ultimate veto power on my part if I saw fit to exercise it. I never did. We conferred a lot, & that worked well ... until the end, obviously. I'd expect you to confer, too, if you felt the need, but I wouldn't back-seat drive. You'd be one below me in the pecking order, but to all intents & purposes, you'd be in charge. What I'm looking for is someone with precisely your attributes, at least as I see them. Young, vibrant, good grasp of Objectivism, a deep, passionate commitment to its future & SOLO's, good 'people skills,' a sound practical bent ... I silently followed your chat with Lance yesterday & thought, 'Here's my man.' You stepped up well to your current job. How about an upgrade?"

It's that time again when FreeRad is being readied for the printer, so no Daily Linz in the interim. When it resumes it'll include Fundamental Stuff again. (I know you're all hanging out for that. Smiling)

I'm disestablishing the position of editor because to all intents & purposes there's no longer anything to edit. With the instant access folk have to the front page with their personal SOLO blogs etc. no one seems to want to write articles as such. So I'm going with the flow on this one. But I'm not disestablishing Mr Bissell. He becomes Deputy-Principal, someone for me to chew the fat with, help me set goals, etc.

Subject: Fw: British Humour

The train was quite crowded, so a U. S. Marine walked the entire length looking for a seat, but the only seat left was taken by a well dressed, middle-aged, French woman's poodle.

The war-weary Marine asked, "Ma'am, may I have that seat?"

The French woman just sniffed and said to no one in particular, "Americans are so rude. My little Fifi is using that seat."

The Marine walked the entire train again, but the only seat left was under that dog.

"Please, ma'am. May I sit down? I'm very tired."

She snorted, "Not only are you Americans rude, you are also arrogant!"
