SOLO-NZ Op-Ed (Lindsay Perigo)—NZX Dildoed by MWA
There are two types of people in life: those who get on with the business of living, and those who try to get in their way. Politicians—of whom Cicero said they were excreted, not born—and bureaucrats are of course foremost in the latter category, but in this crony-capitalist society we have now it is not uncommon to find those who ought to be in the former category sidling up to those in the latter.

SOLO-NZ Op-Ed (Lindsay Perigo): Eco-Fascism in NZ—Beginning of the End?
If the Green Party calls them "a major assault on the [Resource Management] Act and on sustainable development," then, sight unseen, I'm for them.
The advisory group set up by the government after the Canterbury earthquakes to examine quake-related issues relevant to the Act has apparently exceeded its brief in a most edifying way.

It was his facility with this aria and its 9 High Cs that earned Luciano Pavarotti the sobriquet, "King of the High Cs," in the sixties. Here, in 2007, Juan Diego Florez picks up the mantle, and pings out the high notes as though they were bullets. The tumult at the end is not booing—it's the crying of "Bis!", meaning, "Again!" Juan obliges. This is magic:

Fox News has long sabotaged its free market message by seemingly trying to validate the stereotypes of free market journalism—for instance, by having its early morning warm-up show fronted by 3 naked, quacking, airhead women sitting cross-legged on stools and doing Sharon Stone impersonations (it's most annoying that they won't do the same with the men. And I mean Bill Hemmer, not Bill O'Reilly).

RIP America—and It Serves You Right!
America, qua Land of the Free and Home of the Brave, just died. Qua travesty thereof, good riddance. Cowards and cretins—now a majority of Americans—don't deserve the liberty that has just been definitively removed from them. They don't deserve the freedom they won't miss.

I'm obliged to Marcus for drawing this to our attention on the "Which laws ...?" thread. My only misgiving is that this Mr Duncan does not appear to live up to his self-description as a "grammar fascist"—he hasn't gassed anyone, which omission represents a grievous oversight. In a libertarian society, of course, there would be leverage going forward for the narrative that anyone who used the terms "narrative," "leverage" and "going forward" would be summarily executed. This would impact the humanitarian space going forward big-time.

I shall try from now on to get back to posting a gem a week, even though I know the music gems are SOLO's least popular feature. I shall do this because it is in significant measure what SOLO is about, however quixotic my mission may be given the overwhelming preponderance of airheads, headbangers, Faecesbook flibbertigibbets and bestial brutes in the contemporary culture. Time was when I was posting one of these a day—that truly was sacrificial on my part. Once a week will give time for these gems to percolate among those prepared to make the effort. The fact is, in a world dominated by sub-humans unable to appreciate these masterpieces, freedom—much less reason—doesn't stand a chance.

President Ronald Reagan, 25 years ago today. A timely occasion to remind ourselves there were weasel-worders who wanted him to take that line out. Notwithstanding the historic import of Reagan's insistence on delivering it, their ilk have been rampant ever since. In New Zealand, the weasel-worders have been especially conspicuous in the National and ACT Parties:

Among the sidebars on the Intellectual Property thread is a discussion of the religiosity of Objectivists, who, it is claimed (by the anti-IP posters), routinely display a morbid predilection for name-calling and mantra-repetition in lieu of original thought (even though most of the name-calling on that thread comes from the non-Objectivist anti-IP quarter, while the main pro-IP advocate, Objectivist Michael Moeller, comports himself unimpeachably).
