There Is No 'Good Regulation'

[Article Published at American Thinker]

"For an unapologetic capitalist, it's particularly frustrating when an allegedly pro-capitalist politician lacks the intellectual ammunition to adequately defend the free market. Concessions to statist opponents provide the illusion that statists have the moral upper hand. This is especially self-defeating when a politician -- a successful capitalist in his private life who should recognize the dangers of statist principles -- is reduced to merely quibbling over good and bad applications of an inherently pernicious principle."

During the unprecedented three days of oral arguments on Obamacare, J. Kennedy asked, rather rhetorically, if forcing an individual to buy a good/service would radically alter the relationship between government and the individual?

Indeed it does. Unalterably and forever.

Atlas Shrugged: The Movie -- Draining the Motive Power from the Novel

Michael Moeller's picture
Submitted by Michael Moeller on Mon, 2011-05-02 19:12

[Spoiler Alert!]

Over fifty years Atlas Shrugged was published, and more then thirty years since work began on the first film script, I felt Etta James’ song “At Last” playing in my head as I drove to the theater. I was abuzz with excitement at the possibility of finding a “thrill to press my cheek to”. But alas, as the movie unfolded, my cheek felt an icy touch as the lifeblood drained from its dramatic body.

We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done."--Ronald Reagan, 1964.

SOLO-International Op-Ed: Corpseman-in-Chief

Michael Moeller
February 8, 2010

With each new long, drawn out, and substantively empty speech, President Obama's silver tongue has revealed a brain of mush. Most recently, Obama referred to a Navy corpsman as "corpseman", since apparently the teleprompter has not yet incorporated pronunciations phonetically for Dear Leader. Nevertheless, I found the term a wonderfully symbolic moniker for the president himself, and not just applied to his intellectual vacuity, but rather to the entirety of his methods and goals.

Although Sonia Sotomayor's connections to various organizations are important, they are a consequence. What is most important is the legal philosophy that lead her to aligning herself with such organizations. Georgetown law professor Randy Barnett makes some great suggestions for clarifying the judicial philosophy and Constitutional outlook of the nominee--and of Congress.

Debunking Defeatism

Michael Moeller's picture
Submitted by Michael Moeller on Fri, 2006-06-09 23:22

I've lifted this from the "Phil's Plan for World Conquest" thread because it's inspiring—Linz

Phil,

"Moving in a steady decline over the past century"? Really? Then what do you make of the Red Decade? How about the counter-culture of the 60s? The philosophical and cultural underpinnings of those days are favorable compared to today?

I wasn't alive during either of those decades so my finger isn't exactly on the pulse of the culture during those times. However, for evidence look no further than the acceptance of Rand's ideas. What do you make of her early struggles just getting her fiction published, compared with the resounding success the novels enjoy today? I think you are looking at a significant change in the culture--albeit it a subtle one--when even a hardcore Hollywood Lefty like Oliver Stone wants to make a movie out of one of her novels.
