In C.S Lewis’ artful little book titled, The Screwtape Letters, Uncle Screwtape is the older, more experienced demon who advises in letter form his young, impetuous nephew, Wormwood, on the finer points of how to win “the patient’s” soul toward hell and our Father Below. Uncle Screwtape instructs Wormwood, “the safest road to hell is the gradual one - the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts."

Brahms's Third Symphony is his shortest and quietest. In the hands of Maestro Edo de Waart and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra at the Fowler Centre on Friday night it was altogether too quiet in this reviewer's humble opinion.

When Trump took office at the beginning of this year, there were five main agendas that I considered monumentally important in judging the strength of his efficacy as Leader of the Free World:

At Communist Centenary Many Americans Still Believe in Collectivism

My latest:

At communist centenary, many Americans still believe in collectivism
By Edward Hudgins
November 7, 2017

November 7 marks a century since the founding of one of the most murderous tyrannies in human history. Russia's communist empire was an appalling failure in every way, yet we often see the hammer and sickle, the symbol of the Soviet Union, carried on college campuses and at protests around the country. Communism still holds sway among a significant part of the U.S. population.

IS FREEDOM OF SPEECH UNDER THREAT IN NEW ZEALAND?

I’m honoured to be the first speaker at this all-day conference on liberty.

I should perhaps begin by saying that I will disappoint the strict libertarians.

Anna Netrebko Graces Auckland

The night before last, we went to the best concert of our lives so far.  The glorious Russian soprano, Anna Netrebko - deservedly the toast of Europe’s classical world - sang us some ravishing opera highlights. She was accompanied by her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov, the star baritone Elchin Avazov and the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra. What a night!  What a programme!

The Spiritual Experience

Olivia's picture

By Olivia Pierson http://www.oliviapierson.org/b...

When Aristotle, the ancient Athenian philosopher, devised his systems of logic and metaphysics (the study of the nature of reality), he taught that all entities, be they animal, vegetable or mineral, had a distinct identity or nature (essence) and could only ever be or act according to that nature. This became the famous Law of Identity: a thing is itself, formulaically symbolised as ‘A is A’.
