A Bland Brahms, Vibrant Wagner ... and Sensational Sibelius

Brahms's Third Symphony is his shortest and quietest. In the hands of Maestro Edo de Waart and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra at the Fowler Centre on Friday night it was altogether too quiet in this reviewer's humble opinion.

When Trump took office at the beginning of this year, there were five main agendas that I considered monumentally important in judging the strength of his efficacy as Leader of the Free World:

My latest:

At communist centenary, many Americans still believe in collectivism
By Edward Hudgins
November 7, 2017

November 7 marks a century since the founding of one of the most murderous tyrannies in human history. Russia's communist empire was an appalling failure in every way, yet we often see the hammer and sickle, the symbol of the Soviet Union, carried on college campuses and at protests around the country. Communism still holds sway among a significant part of the U.S. population.

Make Western Civilisation Great Again!

Lindsay Perigo's picture
Submitted by Lindsay Perigo on Thu, 2016-12-29 04:25

Undeniably, the biggest events of 2016, seismic in their enormity, were Brexit and the election of Donald Trump. Because of those two events, for the first time in eight years we could say that Western Civilisation had rallied to mount a rearguard action against The Anti-West, aka Islamo-Marxism, aka The Filth. The latter were in pouting, infantile retreat, alternately sullen and hysterical, unable to comprehend that the seeming hegemony of their loathsome, totalitarian world view was not invincible after all.

... In the 1989 Post profile Perigo expressed concerns about the depth of debate he was able to elicit on television: "we’ve become a sort of society where people don't analyse an argument: they attach brandnames to people who proffer arguments and think that they’ve dealt with the argument that way". In 1993 he infamously abandoned the medium, claiming that TVNZ news and current affairs was "braindead", and that stories of celebrities and trapped cats had superseded politics.

Yaron Brook and Amy Peikoff Discuss Immigration Without Linz

edpowell's picture

This is a complete transcript of the discussion between Amy and Yaron about immigration that occurred on Feb 10, 2017 in lieu of the promised debate between Linz and Brook. Brook himself is such a weasel and shifts his position on this issue over and over again depending on the circumstances and audience that I thought it was valuable for a complete record of his remarks be made and made public so that appropriate analysis and criticism can be made of them without actually having to repeatedly listen over and over to the audio recording, which is mind-numbingly painful to listen to.

Devoy vs Voltaire—Reprised with PS, Aug 14, 2017

Lindsay Perigo's picture
Submitted by Lindsay Perigo on Wed, 2017-02-08 22:50

[Reprised with Post-Script, Aug 14, 2017]

Apocryphally, in 1770, the French writer and provocateur François-Marie Arouet (Voltaire) wrote to a French priest, “Monsieur l'abbé, I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write." Actually, he said no such thing. Biographer Evelyn Beatrice Hall, trying to capture the libertarian essence of his attitude to the burning of a book whose content he disapproved of, came up with: “I disapprove of what you say but will defend to the death your right to say it.” The saying, formulated that way, has been attributed to Voltaire ever since.
