Untitled So Far

When my mind is darkened and stormy with regrets,
Words flash into me, lightening on a black sky,
Thunderous phrases crashing against my ears,
Power like a prophetess crackling around my outline.
I can wield poems then like knives,
Cutting into the meat of things,
Reveling in the pain and the blood
That sharp images can inflict.
But when my mind is quiet, contented, satisfied,
The words drift in on a breeze,
Sit softly in my palm like a plucked bloom,
And then I am no prophet, only a girl,
Only a watcher of trees and sunlight,
A record-keeper of tender moments.
The poems then are cool compresses
That I hold to wounds to ease the sting.
I am a cycle of hurting and healing,
Of rubbing emotions raw and soothing them with balm.
I am a cycle too of power and of softness,
Of flashing eyes and hands that break
And of tender flesh giving way to touch.
I am a goddess, a hawk, a scythe,
And a girl, a sparrow, a stalk of wheat.

It makes me think of "Minerva"

Daughter of Jupiter and Metis.
A virgin goddess of warriors, poetry, medicine & doctors, wisdom. commerce, crafts and inventor of music.

Nice work Kelly.

Hi Kelly...

Olivia's picture

Your poem reminded me of the paintings of Frida Kahlo. Despite her appalling communist beliefs, she had a strong sense of life. Phrases like the "cutting into the meat of things" and the "tender flesh giving way to touch" provoked the comparison. Smiling

Thanks, Julie. I am looking

Thanks, Julie. I am looking forward to the readings too. There is almost nothing I like better than reading out loud. I get to be the center of attention, and I get to be engrossed in beautiful poetry. That's a very good combo for me. Smiling

Excellent news Kelly!

Just the sort of thing one would expect to hear in a certain area of Galt's Gulch! The expression of one's own poetic gifts while also enjoying the poetic giftedness of others.

Glad you discovered our comments, I was thinking you may have forgotten you posted these poems on SOLO as they were posted so long ago. Which poses my question I think your new fan club is curious about enough for me to ask again - have you titled this poem by now?

And a new follow up question - do you have any other poems you'd like to post on SOLO?

Thanks so much!! I like

Thanks so much!! I like having a fan club! Not only do I write poetry (sometimes), but I read it alout as well. I'll be giving a reading of poems I think Objectivists (and all people really) will love at the SOLO conference in September.

Kelly

I think Kelly has a fan club on SOLO

Though she posted this so long ago I don't even suspect she knows she has at least three new dedicated fans...! Smiling

Good Poem

Bill Visconti's picture

Real good. And I too thought of "femininity", soft yet strong, caring yet often ferociuos, etc, etc,.

Kelly,I just discovered

Philip Coates's picture

Kelly,

I like this poem of yours.

The title "Instrument" pops into my head, since it's just ambiguous enough to be you as an instrument of words, poems, moods...and poems, words, moods as an instrument of you. "Moods" is okay a a title, but it is more commonly used by everyone as a poem title or theme and gives too much away.

I know I'm discovering this late

I stumbled upon these posts of yours quite by accident but I'm glad I did. You've captured it pretty well here - 'femininity' for lack of a better word. You've captured it in this poem - what makes me so *enthralled* with a woman's personality --- I love it! And your other ones too, but this poem has a very personal resonance with me right now.

I know I'm eleven months late in reading this, have you named the poem yet? Not that you would even need to, your poetry speaks for itself... Smiling
