Leonard Peikoff: "I Am Voting for Trump!"

Partial redemption for all those years of saying, "Vote Dem across the board."

Comes right at the end of this video, along with a repudiation of the sentiment that no Objectivist could vote for Trump. "Whoever said that is crazy."

Perks of one's golden years

Jmaurone's picture

Well, Leonard is up there in years, so what's he got to lose, at this point? To paraphrase a certain novelist/philosopher, it's not he that will die, it's the world that will end, so, tell us how you REALLY feel, Leonard!

This is Leonard permanently

Lindsay Perigo's picture

This is Leonard permanently off the leash, unlike 2013. There's no going back!

Yawon Bwook

Poor Yawon.. he must be so upset; Leonard got off the leash there for a second..

Hypocwit Bwook?

Another snippet of transcript from the video. Brook says "you have to think for yourselves", that his and Peikoff's views aren't commandments, yet, if you vote for Trump, you're not an Objectivist, but a fifth-column sell-out? But Leonard still gets to be an Objectivist, and not a fifth-column sell-out, just someone with whom he disagrees? Or is Yaron ok with being a close friend with a fifth-column sell-out?
He seems panicky...

we
25:15
disagree about whether one should vote
25:17
for trump
25:17
or not and the importance of voting for
25:19
trump in this coming election
25:21
yeah we disagree i've known this for
25:24
three years at least
25:25
that i disagree with leonard peek off on
25:27
this
25:30
you know but i have to think for myself
25:33
you have to think for yourselves i i
25:36
think leonard will tell you that his
25:37
decrees are not
25:38
commandments his opinion is not
25:43
you everything has to be first-handed
25:46
you should be
25:47
first-handed the fact
25:50
that we disagree about trump uh means
25:53
that we don't talk politics that much
25:56
when we get together but we are still
26:00
close friends

Brook's response

Jmaurone's picture

Wow. Brook addressed Leonard's Trump support tonight on his Youtube stream (around the 20 minute mark, should be queued up, already):

https://youtu.be/KcPOvRdCYpk?t...

I didn't watch it, but just saw it in video transcript, and haven't even read it, yet. But quick impression is that it's a bit of deflection, a bit of saltiness, "I can't beweave you people would use Leonard as an authority to defend your Trump vote!".

Brief snippet from the transcript:

um i've you know i think i've agreed
23:18
with leonard on most things but once in
23:20
a while we've disagreed sometimes it
23:21
turns out he was right
23:22
sometimes it turns out i was right about
23:24
certain policy issues
23:26
certain uh political issues uh we have
23:30
we have disagreed in the past uh nothing
23:33
major nothing big but
23:34
we've we've definitely had a
23:36
disagreement
23:38
um but uh you know on the big issues
23:40
like
23:41
voting and stuff for the most part we've
23:43
agreed i find it fascinating that many
23:45
people citing
23:46
you know using lenin [sic, should be Leonard] pickup is now an
23:48
authority for them in terms of voting
23:50
for trump
23:51
these are the same people who probably
23:54
uh you know
23:54
condemned leonard when he advocated for
23:58
voting for john kerry in 2004 or for

Well Spotted, Joe!

Lindsay Perigo's picture

I vaguely remembered that within the dim recesses of my increasingly useless brain, but would never have had the patience or skills to unearth it.

If Evil Yawon wesponds, please let us know!

Leonard should give a proper exegesis of his liberation from Trump Derangement Syndrome. He supported it for so long, if only by his silence; he owes us an explanation.

For posterity...

Yaron Brook, (22 July 2019):

"Americans think they have to choose between the Squad and the crazy nuttiness of the left, and Donald Trump and the crazy nuttiness on the right. Those of you who are apologists for Donald Trump, please never use the word 'Objectivism' to associate it with yourself. Because you cannot be Objectivists. You are not Objectivists if you apologize for this guy. And you are not doing anyone a favor by selling-out, selling-out the fundamental ideas that we are for. For the sake of what? Popularity, defeating the left? You're sell-outs, you're the fifth-column within Objectivism."

Let the Obleftivist rationalizations begin...(I already saw one attempt that tried to say what Yaron said is ok, because "Peikoff's not an apologist...)

"Poor thing" is sarcasm.

Jon Letendre's picture

"Poor thing" is sarcasm. I am not buying Brook's explanation for wearing a vest, it makes no sense. He had some other reason.

No, they did not say by whom or why. And they did not say LP "felt." They said LP's life was being actively and credibly threatened.

I don't doubt you for a minute about seeing Brook in a vest.

...

"poor thing" meaning what?

Jon,
This is the first I’ve heard of this and I’m in no position to contradict your experience. Did any of your informants say who Peikoff felt might try to kill him and why?
In the case of Brook I saw evidence of a bullet proof vest myself. In a TV interview I saw from that period he was wearing a suit coat that was ridiculously too large for him. I noticed it before I came across Steve Reed’s story.

A bulletproof vest is kind of poofy.... Should get some weapons training, buy a gun, and shoot back!

Poor thing ... bullshit!

Jon Letendre's picture

Poor thing was afraid to be randomly shot in America for supporting what every American administration has backed since Truman, 1948?

Bullshit!

Sorry Mark, there is no possibility of a mistaken retelling of what we discussed then.

Employees at ARI told several campus club leaders, who told me, one of whom told me and Adam, in person. (Adam may or may not recall, I haven’t discussed it with him since then.) All who spoke of it were shook-up, spooked. It was a ‘happening now’ thing, the threats.

It could have all been lies, but I was not getting it through a long chain and there was nothing vague or maybe about who was being directly threatened and made to feel unsafe for his life.

...

Probably the rumors you heard were false, a corrupted retelling of the actual fact that Yaron Brook at that time wore a bulletproof vest in public, because he was afraid anti-Israel people might shoot him. Search

for “bullet.”

Total

Jon Letendre's picture

Total redemption.

And I continue to believe he was controlled for years, subjected to threats, forced out of ARI and more.

I was co-President of the ARI-funded and sanctioned Objectivist Club of The George Washington University (with Adam Mossoff.) This was around 1988. I spoke with ARI people and with Objectivists running clubs at other universities every week back then. We heard that Peikoff was wearing a bullet-proof vest daily because his life was being threatened by credibly dangerous characters.

The Exorcism of Yawon Bwook

Jmaurone's picture

"Partial redemption for all those years of saying, 'Vote Dem across the board.'"

So, Bwook tried to out-Pope "Pope Lenny", only to have holy water splash back in his face. I wonder if it burns? I hope so. OrgOsim was certainly in need of an exorcism...

There's so much that can be said about all this. But all that needs to be said is "2020 has been a HELL of a year."

That's gonna leave a mark:

Jeepers!

That is a surprise - but helps to manifest my long time prediction the President will carry California (along with Oregon and Washington for a clean sweep of the west coast).
