"Mind you, the article to which MJ links says some quite horrid things—mystic nonsense about self-interest, etc.—so while both the Rabbi & Ross are saying, "Get the state out of marriage" they do so for quite different reasons."

Indeed! I was unfamiliar with Ross' article when I linked to Rabbi Lerner's article. I am much more in tune with Ross' sentiments. However, in order to change the culture to a point where "getting the state out of marriage" is acceptable, the support of people like Rabbi Lerner can be helpful, regardless of his bad philosophy.

Wow, all I have to do is

Wow, all I have to do is *utter* a preference and it happens. It's like I have a guardian angel or something Eye

Yes, the mystic is confused but his solution is proper.

Noted. Done. Smiling

You BET it's worth republishing

Ross, now, more than ever, we need to get this information out to the public in such a way that it will LISTEN. I am freaking terrified of the way this country is trending and a cultural change has to happen--soon.

In your "Lunar Landing" post, you mentioned public education being one part of the problem. Yet, I am a product of that public education...and I managed to get out of it with some sort of brainpower left. I must admit I found most of it a big waste of time, although I had a few outstanding teachers and professors. I was in the system in the 70's through my college graduation in 1987 (I went to a State University); it did fail me in certain respects. I think I managed to get out before the huge PC movement infiltrated the system. I also read a lot of the wisdom of "dead white males" on my own time, which helped.

But back to the issues this "marriage amendment" raises. How do you reach a populace who is more interested in the disappearance of Natalie Holloway or the first pictures of Brangelina's baby than -- oh, I don't know--the erosion of individual liberties?

“There is no need for any government to define or clarify what marriage is just as there is no need for it to define what a sports club, an orchestral group, a religious organisation or any other voluntary association of individuals is.”

Very well put! And how cloudy is their thinking, to not see that the right to choose (contract with) a religious organization, and the right to choose (contract with) a partner are the same thing.
