New York City - Big Aerials #1

Since Jennifer started her Freedom Tower thread, I've had a barely-contained desire to hi-jack it and turn it into a New York skyscraper expose.

So, I've begun my own Smile

For a start, here's some high aerial shots of my love. They are severely scaled down. Please click on them to get the full impact. They'll open in a new window or tab.

This is a satellite image. It shows all five boroughs, the lower tip of NY state inc. Westchester County and, across the Hudson, Noo Joisey. You can clearly make out all waterways--even the Harlem River and the Kills around Staten Island. The Verazzano Narrows Bridge which connects Brooklyn & Staten Island stands out. Coney Island, Rockaway and most of Long Island is visible. Click image to enlarge

This is nice. Taken from the northeast and obviously earlier in the morning; you can see the bright sun hitting the sides of the buildings. The Hell Gate rail bridge and the Triborough Bridge are in the lower middle. The two main clusters of skyscrapers at Midtown & Downtown are obvious. The Empire State Building stands out gloriously just above the midtown cluster. Click image to enlarge

This shot is taken from the southeast and late on a winter's day. We are hovering over Brooklyn and the Brooklyn entrance to the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel is visible in the bottom left. The tunnel runs under the harbor and pops up near the park at the lower tip of Manhattan Island. Downtown Brooklyn has a nice cluster of tall timber, which would serve any city well, but it seems like an anti-climax when positioned across the river from Manhattan. You can see the triplet of bridges on the lower East River--really an estuary--which I remember by the letters BMW; Brooklyn, Manhattan & Williamsburg. And the Empire State Building just keeps on standing proud. Click image to enlarge

Yes, Chi Town has it's own special beauty. I'll do a thread on that city soon Smile

My first ever flight, in

My first ever flight, in '99, took us over the New York skyline. It was a beautiful sight...

No to hijack your thread...

but if you want to see skyscrapers in all their glory look no further then their birthplace and home of the tallest -- Chicago and the Sears Tower. Forgive this midwest boy since I still have not visited the Big Apple to see for myself the glory that is the NY skyline, but my first trip to Chicago in middle school was where I met my first skyscraper.
