A helpful suggestion for 'random acts of kindness day'

Someone tells me that today has been decreed "random acts of kindness day" -- in New Zealand at least.

Perhaps if that was to be combined with Casual Sex Friday ... ?

... no?

Anyone??

Just a thought, you know. Just a thought.

Holidays

Melissa Lepley's picture

Honestly, I like holidays. Most of them, anyway.

I love giving presents (I certainly don't mind getting them!), I enjoy spending time with my family, or cooking a nice meal for the people I love.

I just have this knee-jerk reaction against people telling me what to do, how to act on a specific day, or how to feel just because they've decreed it so.

I don't have a problem with historical holidays, set on a specific day to remember an event. Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Thomas Jefferson Day (my personal favorite Laughing out loud), etc. are all right in my books.

I certainly don't mind the meaning of Valentine's Day, or even Random Kindness Day. There's just something in me that doesn't like being told what to do. Sticking out tongue

Just me, I guess.

Peter, that's completely uncalled for. I have never broadcast my phone number to any woman on this forum no matter how desperately she may appear to be rubbing her thighs together... my email address, on the other hand, is *really easy* to find Eye

Melissa, I never really got

Melissa, I never really got why people don't like to have set days for stuff. I love to set days for specific things I want to be doing a lot. I love Valentine's Day. I don't care that we should feel loving and want to do giving things for our lover all year long. I still want a holiday for it. I love having Christmas to give presents to people I love, even though I think of them and give them presents all the time. I love having Thanksgiving as a time to think about the fruits of productivity, even though I see the fruits and feel them all year long. So, I want a holiday for everything I enjoy! I want a day to celebrate that feeling of wanting to be benevolent to anyone and everyone I meet. We could rename it Benevolence Day. I'll have to add it to my list. I already have Chosen Family Day (April 22) to celebrate life long friends that will never be truly away from me. So, basically, I am all for making a day to celebrate things, even things we should already be doing all the time.

Also, I am not trying to make this too serious. I know you were all laughing at the typical way people interpret Random Acts of Kindness Day. I just thought this was an interesting way to look at it.

And Jennifer, feel free to kick some cats. Benevolence does not apply to cats. (Sorry Boaz.) Smiling

Kindness,

Melissa Lepley's picture

Kelly, I actually agree with you, I was just being a smart-ass.

Sometimes you get so full of joy at life and existence, you want to spill some of that happiness out on the people you're near. I get that! Laughing out loud

I just think that having a specific DAY for random kindness... Well, if nothing else, it makes it less random! Eye I mean, they have commercials about doing nice things. It's getting a bit saccharine, this glamorization of just being a decent, nice person.

Being told to be randomly kind makes me not want to be, when I usually would. It's a good thing we don't have "random acts of kindness" day here in the states...I'd probably have to go out and be deliberately rude, just in protest.

(Please, if we DO have such a day, don't tell me. I would, just this once, rather not know.) Sticking out tongue

Cat

It's only one day. For those that can't do benevolence for more than one day I suspect that means they can kick their cat tomorrow without censure.

The difference is...

Prima Donna's picture

...that such is your state of being, darling -- as it should be. That people need an official holiday to put benevolence into action just makes me feel creeped out. So keep kissing toes, and I'll keep refraining from kicking cats. (Joke. That I kick them in the first place, I mean. I save that for kids.)

I'm kind of a sap . . .

but I sort of like the idea of random kindness. It is a lot like general benevolence to me. Sometimes I am just walking along, and I feel so overcome with good feelings about living in the world and being so happy and efficacious in it and seeing happy and efficacious people, I just want to grab some person (a random one?) and kiss them full on the mouth and say, "Aren't you glad we're human!?" I don't generally do this. Instead, I leave a too big tip or wink at some man or kiss some unknown baby's toes or help an old lady with her groceries. Is this random kindness? If so, I like it, and I declare random acts of kindness day a good idea and highly compatible with the feeling that makes me want to have sex. (Thank you, Peter.) Smiling

Melissa, that was fabulous. In honor of you I'm going to not kick the next cat I see.

random.

Melissa Lepley's picture

I'm trying to decide how best to be both "random" and "kind" at the same time. Would this constitute being kind to random people? Or being randomly kind to one person?

Or being generally kind in a random way to specific people? Should I close my eyes, spin around, and point?

Can someone please give an example of random kindness? I'd hate to miss out on this spiffy holiday.

Hmmm...

Sticking out tongue I'm not sure I'd like to mix up "random" or "kindness" with sex. Keep those two days far apart!
