Classical Jazz... and a little tango.Submitted by Ross Elliot on Wed, 2006-10-18 00:33.
Just tremendous, especially the second suite with its very Russian waltzes. More Cossack stomp than Viennese spin Can anyone suggest great jazz-orientated music from classical composers? Also, I heard some tango music on Concert FM yesterday that really caught my attention. Didn't get the name. It was a small ensemble, perhaps a quartet, and the strings were very strident. Uncomplicated, yet rhythmically powerful with strong melodies. Any suggestions?

Is it all right if I call you Lin? You might think me over-polite, but I have had my rear kicked for making up nicknames for people.
Oh, I specialise in making up nicknames for people.
Go ahead and call me Lin. I've been called much worse.
Linz
Hey Lindsay
Thanks for the welcome. I will be uploading a pic as soon as I can find a usb cable to download all my pics from my cam.
PS: I recently read this book called Shantaram and the main protagonist was called Lindsay Ford. But everyone in the book called him Lin.

When in doubt, think.

Welcome aboard. Just a reminder we need a photo of your good self.
Yeah, I agree with Jeff,
Yeah, I agree with Jeff, Gershwin is the only composer who comes to mind when I think of a jazz classical style. See, most of the composers use very classical instruments, but in Gershwin's pieces, you will find the abundant use of trumpets, cymbals, and even drums.
Check out the finale of Rhapsody in Blue.

Well if you want the most sexy, brooding, passionate, classical and unforgetable Tango look no further than Astor Piazzola. Amazing. So, so, so Tango.
Muy sexy.

Try:
Tango: Zero Hour
It'll blow your mind.
Or any of the Gidon Kremer arrangement/recordings (they are the black and white album covers, very obvious.... y fenomenal!).
And as for (the lesser, heh) Shostakovich I am mad about this recording.
Gershwin
Most of Gershwin.
