Military draft

Democrat Congressman Charles Rangel of NY is proposing reinstating the draft, on the grounds that it would discourage U.S. involvement in wars. Curious-looking rationale for conscription. Why not propose all kinds of egregious government controls on the grounds that they'd lead to unpopular results?

I think that the Islamists would be proud if they got the U.S. to institute the draft and commit ever-more troops to fighting off their ever-multiplying cockroaches back east. The idea, supposedly, is that the U.S. can't afford to let Iraq go because of the stakes for mideast stability and the risk of emboldening Iran, and yet it will have to commit ever-more troops to the war if it wants to make Iraq stable. The U.S. seems like it's being pushed into the kind of no-win situation that makes Islamists salivate.

Rangel doesn't appear to actually propose doing what's needed to WIN the war, mind you. We do fight wars anymore to actually win them, yes?

"You've gotta be shittin' me, Joker! You mean to tell me that we can win the Big One but we can't control a two-bit country and beat back insurgents? Where the fuck were you trained, Private Joker? You're not a quitter, you're a killer! I bet you if there were some pussy at the end of the war you'd get it finished right away, now wouldn't you!"

See, I partially don't think

KingRandor82's picture

See, I partially don't think this draft is gonna pass- 'know why? Simple: they want Clinton/Obama in office in '08, don't they? See, they're really in no position to screw things up here. Basically, without realizing it, the Democrats have put themselves between a rock, a wall, and a hard place.

Gee Nancy and Harry, those Majority Leader seats of yours don' feel as comfy now, DO THEY? Smiling

In what capacity...

... do those airmen serve?

The way I read it here the problem now lies with the Democrat Congress

Quote: "Every year, the Air Force is required by law to meet Congressionally-mandated end strength numbers, a total number of people authorized in service. Based on that end strength number, we are given a budget, and we are required to stay within our budget."

Downsizing

Don't forget also that the air force is downsizing. We are in the middle of a war and they are forcing folks into retirement.

No shortage

Jeff Perren's picture

"Obviously, the shortage of manpower the U.S. is experiencing is the result of a volunteer army."

When the President and Secy of Defense both suggest sending more troops to Iraq, but the head of the military effort says "No, thanks. Don't need them; more would probably be a bad idea," clearly there is no shortage.

A DIM policy?

I hope that no Objectivists voted for Rangel on Peikoff's advice. That would be embarrassing, especially as Rand vigorously opposed the draft.

Who was not a Crook?

Ted Keer's picture

When the draft was imposed for the first time (execpt briefly, during the Civil War) and then it was constitutionality challenged under Woodrow Wilson, two-term Democrat, (eh hem,) the arguments put before the Supreme Court by the Wislon Administration included the fact that "the Czar and the Kaiser used the draft." Just think if Republicans allowed the draft to go through, if there were enough Democratic votes, and enough retiring Republicans to fall on their swords. Nothing could put statism at home in starker contrast. But this would require some neo-conical forethought. In any case, it was the lionized Wilson who began the draft and the reviled Nixon who ended it.

The new volunteerism

Mario's picture

Rangel is simply extending the idea of student volunteers to young adults. Since the big push several years ago to require that students "volunteer" so many hours of community service to earn a high school diploma, people who can't stand those who think their life is their own are hoping for the day the populace is softened up enough to accept conscription without a peep of protest. In the meantime, every time they roll the idea out to test the waters, their reasoning gets more and more creative.

Obviously, the shortage of manpower the U.S. is experiencing is the result of a volunteer army. People who don't want to fight an unpopular war for which the U.S. has no compelling interest are already protesting with their feet, which they are using to walk right past recruiting offices.

It's absurd to argue that a draft will make it less likely that we will involve ourselves in wars.

Moreover, when I read Rangel's statement, I saw that what he was really up to was drafting people to perform all kinds of social services. He and his kind are upset that more of us aren't what they would consider "community minded" -- so they would like at the very least to commandeer our bodies for what they judge to be of benefit to the community.

See, here's where things get

KingRandor82's picture

See, here's where things get REALLY funny- apparently, now that the Democrats won a resounding victory in congress( mainly due to Republican corruption), they suddenly think all their socialist ideas are suddenly a slam-dunk hit in this country again. Just sit back and watch as they crash and burn on everything...wow, a free America might be coming up sooner than everyone expected- I mean with both Republicans and Democrats bumbling and fumbling more often these days than they ever have before. It's quite funny to watch.

Truthfully......

I was never really expecting too much out the Democrats, just some good-ol' checking of the powers that our ruler seems to gain daily, though I didn't expect the idea of a draft to surface so early, let alone by a Dem. If the draft is reinstated, I won't go, and they'll have to put in prison. I've got a friend that's lucky; he's a Canadian citizen, so if the draft comes he can simply leave.

I'm not going to lie; I'm like Yossarian, from Catch-22. If it is absolutely necessary that I fight to defend my freedoms and country, I will, but I'll be damned if I have to go out and die just so my president can gain control of a country.
Just ask Mike Ruppert, I'm getting the feeling that we could have become good friends. http://www.fromthewilderness.com/free/ww3/zbig.html
This complements the video I linked in the "Truth & Lies of 9/11" thread.

It's still not likely to

Adam Buker's picture

It's still not likely to pass. I was watching CNN not too long ago and they reported that most of the leading Democracts including Nancy Pelosi, were against the idea of the draft. The last time something like this was voted on (2004 I believe) it was defeated 400 votes against, 2 votes for.

Wasn't it MTV's "Vote or Die" campaign that said if you voted for Republicans that the draft would be re-instituted? Oh the irony.
