It was originally taxed by

It was originally taxed by the owners of the virtual world, Linden Labs.  A 'revolution' (complete with avatars wandering around with signs reading 'born free, taxed to death') took place, and Linden Labs reversed their policy, after which the Second Life population exploded.

Any income earned by converting Linden currency to US currency must by law be declared to the IRS - so virtual wealth is taxed the moment it becomes real wealth.

Personally, I don't understand the fuss about Second Life ... why not be a real entrepreneur, rather than a virtual one?

If commerce is being had in this online world...how long before it starts being taxed?

From Happy Days to Cyber Craze

I have experienced as many exciting adventures and memories in my virtual world, on my own and with my (internet) friends as I have in real life. It is all so real - WOW, with new technology I can hardly wait.

The future is damned! exciting, as you say Melissa.

I think you'll find that

I think you'll find that there are such sugar daddies out there in real life ... and that there's a mighty good reason they prefer the mutable reality of a virtual universe Smiling

Second Set

We played around in there for a while, and considered doing some cooking-related stuff, but to be frank I don't know enough to program my avatar to do anything fun. She does have really big boobs though. Ha! Smiling

Funny thing: Almost the moment I signed on there were men offering to buy me things -- including those boobs. Too bad there aren't more sugar daddies out here in the "other" reality!

The exciting premise behind the internet and the virtual world

J. Heaps-Nelson's picture

Melissa,

The exciting premise behind both the internet and the virtual world is that we can extend our reach beyond our physical limitations. We can transfer the physical world into the virtual world and reach farther. As the virtual world becomes more intuitive and lifelike, it will spur greater participation and allow more meaningful interaction.
