A documentary called Victoria's Empire has just screened in the UK on BBC One. It is about the British comedian, Victoria Wood, travelling around the former British Empire of Queen Victoria and questioning how the people living there now feel about the British.

Well, on the NZ leg of her tour she visits the radio studio where Willie Jackson and Lindsay Perigo are having an argument about how the "Treaty of Waitangi" is or is not relevant today. Linz incidentally is the only white NZer that speaks on the entire NZ leg of her tour. After Linz is seen shouting Willy down over the Maori gravy train - Victoria Wood sort of tut tut's and then plays some Mario Lanza over views of Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Congratulations Linz. You got a good viewing on terrestrial BBC TV. If this comes up on youtube then I will be sure to post it Smiling

I watch the start of the first showing but switched off because Victoria Wood was so irritating. She is well past her best. I missed the repeat but there may be another soon.

For UK Soloists...

Bolshevik Broadcasting

Bolshevik Broadcasting Corporation!!!! FUCKING WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE SEEN THAT!!! Victoria's lack of animation is surprising, given that I've heard her humor is quite the opposite. So much for taking your show to Bolschevik Broadcasting Corporation radio...! Smiling

Vapid Victoria

The filming of that was a set-up between Willie and the BBC. Willie had the Harawira woman lined up to phone in and speak uninterrupted. I knew nothing of that arrangement. I kept quiet while she said her piece thinking I'd rip into her once she stopped. When she stopped, Willie just said goodbye or kia ora, took her off air and that was that. Still, I made sure I had plenty to say overall. At one point the BBC producer started telling us what to say. I said we'd do the show we'd normally do, say the things we'd normally say, as though the cameras weren't there—this was our show, not the BBC's. I called them the Bolshevik Broadcasting Corporation too. Bet they didn't use that bit!!

Victoria was amazingly quiet for such a celebrity. Willie and I kept trying to draw her into the arguments, but she just sat there looking blank.

Way to go LINZ!

And on BBC One no less! This I'd have to see, and I've heard good things about Victoria as well so please do update us on YouTube status of this segment, Marcus!
