Best Practices

Having just read an excellent article by James Joyner online in the April "New Individualist", I clicked on his blog "Outside the Beltway". Here are his website's policies:

"We welcome open debate and viewpoints that differ from those of the post authors. That said, we wish to keep the conversation civil and the following policies, subject to change without notice, apply:

"Remember that the people under discussion are human beings. Comments that contain personal attacks about the post author or other commenters will be deleted. Repeated violators will be banned. Challenge the ideas of those with whom you disagree, not their patriotism, decency, or integrity.

"The use of profanity stronger than that normally permitted on network television is prohibited. A substantial number of people read this site from an office or in a family environment.

"The following will almost always be deleted: Comments that are completely off topic...Any form of trolling, defined as comments that appear intended to send the discussion in a fruitless direction..."

OTB looks to be a highly successful "blog center" with over two dozen blogs gathered under one roof: He has had over 18 million visitors in four years and over a thousand were online fairly late in the day when I looked at the site. The reason the above are fairly standard 'best practices' policies -- they are ones that "professionals" more and more seem to adopt, is that departures from them tends to keep websites and blogs very tiny and uninfluential and unrespected. (An additioinal reason for the OTB stricture against not using frequent profanity is that it's too cheap and too easy: It acts as a substitute for precisely formulating and explaining your arguments with clarity and detail. Which is why you don't see profanity-laced matter in the New Yorker or the Atlantic Monthly or Commentary or the Weekly Standard.)

Ha, Jason!

I told you at the time—no need to feel bad. And you were indeed the first person to spot his plagiarism. You should feel very, very good!! Smiling

Linz

BTW, if anyone can be bothered—just whom was he plagiarising with his Lenny Bruce article? I knew when I read it I'd seen it before.

Amazing

It is interesting that it is Ellen Stuttle who is the main whistle blower over there. In fact I remember just after I had bombed Victor out of SOLO that she posted a message on Oliving stating that what he did here did not represent plagiarism but merely a mistake. I guess it would have been impossible for her to know exactly what I found in that (likely not singular) instance of plagiarism on SOLO.

It was exactly like the multiple reported incidents over on the MSK site. He took a piece of writing, changed several words and phrases around and presented it as his own. It is the same crap that he seems to be unable to stop himself from doing on just about any internet message forum and probably everywhere else. In any case, I felt bad at the time and thought maybe I had overreacted due to Victor pissing me off in some of his posts here on SOLO. I guess I was just the first person to out an obvious pathological liar. I don't feel bad anymore.

Hahahaha!

I followed the links and also saw a thread about some plagiarism by Victor that came *after* the plagiarism written about here. The only sane voices were those of Ellen Stuttle, and, dare I say, Barbara. The rest was like some hybrid pomo Greek chorus of Victor's wacko fans, the slimy MSK diminishing the enormity of Victor's behaviour and Daniel Barnes trying to keep an argument going about what "it" means. Oh, and intermittent burps from Brant Gaede. What a cast of ninnies! Best laugh I've had in ages.

Jesus!

Again! Well now that he's not liked on Oliving I will be on the lookout for obvious fake users here. Last time it was his invented roommate "Barry". I wonder who it will be this time.

Pross Plagiarism Links

Kenny's picture

You can read more on Pross's recent plagiarising here and his resulting "departure" here.

It may well have been Nicholas Dykes's SOLO piece on rights that was plagiarised. Pross deleted his original post to cover up his misdeeds so it is not possible to confirm it. Note the "sympathetic" posts from Ed Hudgins and Robert Campbell. Robert said that he would tackle Pross on his plagiarism here. It seems, sadly, that Robert failed to do so,

Kenny,

Unless there is a personal value involved, beyond reparation and remedy, I view integrity as a paramount, but personal issue. I would generally expect board owners to be concerned with it and it is their prerogative to ban posters for plagiarism. It is clear Victor has integrity issues. Linz's banning didn't make an impression, all of the instances were pointed out so I doubt he's going to change. It's up to him to fix his problem or suffer the consequences.

Jim

Really?

Lindsay Perigo's picture

Has Victor been at it again? Was it Nicholas's rights article?

One of the points of departure I have with the "Can't we all just get along?" brigade is their complete lack of scruple when it comes to sanctioning things like plagiarism (Coates made excuses for an earlier instance of it as I recall) and contaminating themselves with the squirtings of a total skunk like MSK. I cannot comprehend such amoralism.

Linz

PS—Phyllis, I'm delighted you've found a parade you don't feel constrained to piss on, a sandcastle you don't feel constrained to kick down. And you didn't even have to create your own! I wish you every happiness there, though I can't say I'll miss your sermons. And SOLO will remain pretty much unmoderated.

What about plagiarism James?

When I took a rare visit to Objectivist Living a few days ago, you were one of the posters who took a relaxed view of Victor Pross's plagiarism. It seems that he was caught plagiarising Nicholas Dykes. Even Barbara Branden and Ellen Stuttle excoriated him (unlike Ed Hudgins and Robert Campbell!). Linz was right to ban Pross for plagiarism here. MSK tolerated it.

Guidelines

J. Heaps-Nelson's picture

While I am in general agreement with the guidelines, many people have come to this site precisely because they wanted to push an agenda or bring up issues of integrity.I'm all for civility but it should not be at the cost of driving conflict underground or masking the fact that people do not get along and have irreconcilable conflicts.

Because of the central importance of sanction in Objectivist disputes, personal questions and immovable intellectual factionism have festered for decades. Why not simply have it out and settle it or come to a realization that the conflict is truly irreconcilable?

Which would pretty much see most of your comments deleted, Phil.
