Bill Stone's dream is to one day explore interplanetary space and to be involved in the first privately funded lunar colony. I highly recommend checking out Bill Stone's talk given at the most recent TED conference. The guy is an amazing entrepreneur, and very KASS.

The first part of the clip is all about cave exploration and related technology, the last part deals with commercial lunar ice mining, which would provide fuel to a LEO 'gas station'. Bill talks about how commercial ventures will lead the way to furthering space exploration.

"Manned Space Exploration: What's Missing?
A business driven mission
Guts
Leadership

Solution:
Run an industrial 'Lewis & Clarke'expedition to Shackleton crater to mine the moon for resources and to demonstrate that they can form the basis of a profitable business in low Earth orbit."

"Bill Stone, the maverick cave explorer who invented robots and dive equipment that have allowed him to plumb Earth's deepest abysses, explains his efforts to build a robot to explore Jupiter's moon Europa. The plan is to send the machine to bore through miles of ice and swim through a liquid underworld that may harbor alien life. And if that's not enough, he's also planning to mine lunar ice by 2015."

Burt Rutan: " I look forward to a new, capitalist, space race.."

You're welcome for the link. Here is a similar talk given last year by Burt Rutan EntrepreneursAreTheFutureOfSpaceFlight

"In this passionate talk, legendary spacecraft designer Burt Rutan lambastes the US government-funded space program for stagnating: 'Houston, we have a problem. We're entering a second generation of no progress.' He calls for entrepreneurs to lead the next wave of space exploration, funding new crafts, new (manned) missions, and entirely new approaches to space exploration."

Sadly, though unsurprisingly, he was criticised for suggesting private wealth be spent on something 'fun' such as space travel, when there is still world poverty etc. How dare he!

A little about Burt (source: wikipedia)

Burt Rutan is an American aerospace engineer noted for his originality in designing light, strong, unusual-looking, energy-efficient aircraft. He is most famous for his design of the record-breaking Voyager, which was the first plane to fly around the world without stopping or refueling, and the suborbital rocket plane SpaceShipOne, which won the Ansari X-Prize in 2004.

Awesome!

Thanks for the link.

The recent Popular Science has an article on space diving being pursued by Orbital Outfitters.

What an exciting time!
