Why Race Will Always Matter

I grew up in a Latino and African American ghetto. I was a mild mannered, sky kid. I was picked on, and called out because of the color of my skin.

I went to grammar school that was overwhelmingly Latino--and not middle class Latino. Gang-infested, shootings and deaths every summer. In seventh grade, when I was announced the essay winner at an academic competition, a overwhelmingly Latino crowd booed me because of the color of my skin.

High school was white, black, latin, asian, you name it. Black kids chose white kids to prey on, took things from their lockers, broke into their lockers. It was never acknowledged that white kids were being targeted because of their race.

Throughout my education, and particularly at my liberal college and law school education, I was taught there is no difference, that judging based on race is wrong, or even making generalizations on race are wrong.

Objectivism taught me that each individual must be judged on merit, not skin color, national origin, or whether they are tall, short, brunette or blond.

And you know what? I believe it. It's true.

A person's genetics or family or nation of origin tells me nothing about the most important things that one should value in a person.

But we will never escape race and all the ugliness it encompasses, because others are not as evolved, intelligent, empathetic, or nice and fair minded as I am. Not because the color of their skin dictates it, but because they are taught it and believe it.

I am not exclusively referring to white supremacists, whose numbers are so small and influence so insignificant that they just do not matter.

I am talking about the average, poorly-educated, Latino or African American young person. The hip-hop gangsta culture that is so pervasive.

They hate whites, let's face it. Either explicitly or implicitly. I have seen it all my life.

Statistics on interracial crime overwhelmingly bear out that whites are much more racially accepting and tolerant and less, well, racist, than blacks. Case in point: per the FBI, there were 1700 white on black crimes in 2002, and almost 2 million black on white crimes in 2002.

Understand, I don't think it has anything at all to do with their genetics, or their skin color, national origin, or anything else implicit to them as people.

It's their culture. Their subculture and our culture.

Our culture teaches that to be white means to be weak, to be passive, to be overly-understanding, to be a sucker, a nerd, a target, a victim. To object and be assertive and white just might mean someone (wrongly) accuses you of racism, which is a death blow to career, social standing, and is a fast track to instant pariah-hood.

Their subculture teaches them that they have been wronged--well not them individually, maybe--but culturally, historically, and that anything they do is okay, and anything a person with the wrong color skin objects to is racist.

There is a terrible double standard, and we all need to snap out of it. We need to stop accepting that being non-white absolves you of your personal conduct and choices. A good first step would be acknowledging that there is a massive wave of anti-white racism in the black and latino communities. Don't tell me it isn't there. I've seen it all my life.

But how do you teach a fairly sophisticated lesson to an unreceptive audience that does not value education, erudition, and barely learns to read by the time they graduate high school?

Case in point: after a 14 hour work day, I was riding the train home at 10 pm through Chicago's notorious "West Side." The train was full of African Americans, and one other white person other than me. A young man waited for the train to stop, waited for the train doors to begin to close, and then threw a plastic water bottle full of urine at me, hitting me in the chest and soaking my bag and some Court papers with his urine, and jumped off the train. The racial epithet he shouted left no doubt as to why he did what he did. No racial epithet passed my lips.

This is a young guy who wasn't even born during any civil rights travails. There cannot be any rational justification other than blind ignorance to explain his actions.

Nothing has changed in 38 years. People who do not know what a great and fair minded person I am hate me because I am white. I am not supposed to acknowledge it, though.

I am so angry, so soul-sick over this.

That's all.

Sigh, that was a great piece

Sigh, that was a great piece you wrote there.

I have been saying for many years that the most discriminated person is a white middle aged heterosexual employed male.

Make no mistake...

...had I caught the fucker, there would have been a beating like he never had. His timing was impeccable. I am a natural multitasker, so I was reading a book and listening to am mp3 and so, distracted. I stood up quickly which minimized the piss exposure, and the train was literally in motion at that point, the guy gone. Had I reacted a bit quicker, I could have pulled the emergency stop handle and chased him on the platform. On the other hand, he could have had a gun. But, that was a chance I would have willingly taken. Cowardly fucker. His timing certainly suggests he has done it before. Thanks for the empathy.

Obviously, you judge the individual individually. It is foolish not to identify tendencies in subcultures and comport yourself accordingly. Black males between the ages of 15 and 35 overwhelming commit the most violent crimes. It is not racist to acknowledge this and comport yourself accordingly. There is an argument to be made that I was foolish to be on that train, in that part of the city, at that late hour. But I BELIEVE in the American dream. I BELIEVE that a black guy can come to restuarant in a white neightborhod, a Mexican guy can come into an Asian neighbrhood-your an American, we are all Americans--you go where you want. Foolish, maybe. As has been proven to me. I guess if I don't want to be shit on by non-whites, I have to stay away from them? Not going to happen. Im still going where I want, and doing what I want.

gee sorry to hear that, that

gee sorry to hear that, that sounds fucked mate, what a scumbag. Can you carry a weapon where you live, he could have been throwing acid at you? That would infuriate me as well, maybe to the point of doing something irrational.

Yeah it would be great if you could judge people solely on their ethnicity. Unfortunately you can't, unless they align themselves blatantly with some group whose values you can judge, everyone has to be judged as an individual.
Anyway you knew that already, hope you're able to chill out a bit.

Hear hear!

It's disgusted me for a long time that black or Latino people have a much easier time getting into college than I do. It's patently ridiculous to think that someone's ancestry tells you anything about what they will contribute to an educational institution, and yet this is the prevailing philosophy among universities today.

Case in point: one of my younger brother's good friends is a black kid who's got absolutely nothing to do with the culture that you describe. His father is one of the most successful surgeons in the Twin Cities area; the man is kept on call and on retainer by several of the local professional sports teams. The kid's mother graduated with honors from an Ivy League law school. And does he feel compelled to play "street ball", wear mountains of fake jewelry, and punctuate every sentence with unprintable words? Nope; he's a prized member of the hockey and lacrosse teams at the state's most prestigious private school and has been recognized numerous times for his exceptional friendliness and personal integrity.

And yet the most important factor in this kid's college admissions will be the fact that he's black. It's absurd; he's an excellent person in every respect, and yet the first thing that the admissions committee will look at is his race. And imagine what he must feel, knowing that he's being judged more for the failures of his race than for his own achievements.

I should note...

that the piss-filled bottle incident happened last night, which precipitated the blog post later that same evening.

Thanks for sharing that mate. One word: Altruism.

"We" grow up being taught to feel sorry for "them" because they are "disadvantaged" or "misunderstood" or "disenfranchised". THIS is the most racist attiude of all.

This sort of attitude, which is borne out in things like reduced admissions standards to universities, special welfare benefits, and sometimes even special treatment under the law for "them", is the worst possible answer to the problem. Not only does it teach the "them" individual that nothing is expected of him - so he may as well not even try - but it breeds a derogatory feeling of both arrogance and inferiority towards "sucker whitey" (among other things). This leads to the crime that Scott speaks of, and this in turn starts to piss "whitey" off, and then bam, your racism problem is worse than ever before, and you see fighting and rioting on the streets in Paris, Sydney, etc.

Granted, there have been problems IN THE PAST between different races, but these problems are exacerbated by giving the great great grandchildren of those wronged an excuse to carry around a chip on their shoulder.

The culture is f**ked...

The only thing propping up the hip-hop culture are the people who tolerate it and go out of their way to help the moral cripples it creates even though those cripples are indifferent to any help.

Practice a scorched earth policy with the racist urine throwers of the world and their mute audience. Disentangle yourself from anything that requires you to give aid and comfort to them against your better judgement.

If you are a public defender, go private. There is nothing to stop you doing pro-bono work for people you deem worthy of your time later. Take a taxi instead of the train. Consider leaving Chicago for somewhere more color-blind.

In essence I'm advocating a mini Atlas Shrugged.

It's nothing less than sickening. The sense of entitlement among many inner city blacks leaves little room for reason.

have hit a few nails on the head.
That train journey sounds dreadful, gosh, the behaviour seems so undignified.

(Bunch of savages)

I regard it as a badge of honour to have grown up in an affluent, 100% White Anglo Saxon environment, attended a private school and never knew (or even met) Maori or Polynesian people until my late teens.

Considering the primitive behaviour involving babies and clothes driers recently, I find it jolly welcome to be removed from it all!

I must say, it is difficult not to view certain matters as being racially based.

Living in Remuera I do not know anybody White who acts like that, yet my Samoan maid/cook, her Sons (including the cute one with the great legs) are professional shoplifters and petty thieves....something she tut tuts about but seems oblivious to the underlying deceitfulness of! (just astounding!)
