Are William and Phil referring to the same post? I suspect William means the first post, the post that initiated the thread, while Phil said 'last post' indicating one of the follow-on replies.

You are correct. If someone edits the post it changes the status as 'updated'. I'm not sure which changes exactly trigger it, but for sure changing the title or content would. If you are interested I can check out the drupal documentation and let you know which changes trigger 'updated'.

Does updated "in some way" but no new posts mean that the person who made the last post (and therefore can edit it) went back and edited his wording or changed his post. But no new posts were added to the thread?

Phil, this is working properly. The 'tracker' page shows the most recent updates to the site. This means that the post has been updated in some way since you last viewed it. If you click on the updated page while logged in, the site will mark it as 'read' again for you automatically. This is different behavior from the previous version but is not necessarily a bug.

When I log on I see a pageful of "recent posts".

The recent changes have caused threads to which no one has posted for a week to appear at top marked "updated" or "new".

it used to show you the threads recently posted to up there and the number of unread posts, which is the way it should be and, obviously, what anyone would want to see.
