"I agree it is unenforceable, I agree that we cannot go out and shoot someone or put lip clamps on smokers," Mr Tennent said (laments).

"What we are doing as a community is putting a line in the sand and saying what we believe is appropriate. What we are doing in this community is saying it is inappropriate to smoke around our young people."

"The idea is the public will encourage smokers not to light up."

"Stratford might take the policy even further. Chief executive Michael Freeman said smoking bans in streets and outside bars and cafes would be considered next year."

Social marketing is a complete misnomer, there is no market, no product or service being sold. They are taxpayer funded, government organised, specifically branded, 'awareness campaigns'. Examples (from New Zealand) are: 'Sorted', '5+ A Day', 'SunSmart', 'Push Play', and of course 'Smokefree'.

fuuuuuuuuuck

What would George say?

Phil's picture

Where will it end?

Personally I am not a fan of smoking. As a doctor I have seen people lose legs from it, go blind fast from it, gasp like a fish out of water from it and seen a number die early from it.

But that's not the point. The point is it's just not my call or anyone's for that matter, to demand how other people should live their lives.

What is around the corner? Will the busybodies tell us what to eat? Maybe how much to eat? Should we be allowed to drink alcohol ? Maybe they will start kicking us out bed early for calisthenics?

Perhaps they will look at what books to read? What movies to see?

Hey what about sex? Hell we have got who to shag, how to shag, how long, how often...not to mention when.

What would George Orwell say? I would guess "Well friends and neighbours this is how it begins. Now the fun starts..."

It's for your own good though.

That policy was put in place

Lance's picture

That policy was put in place because non smoking parents don't want their kids to have to be around smokers.

Yep, that's partly true, however what a lot of people don't realise is that there is 'smoke free' and then there's 'Smokefree'. 'Smokefree' is a brand, a 'social marketing' brand. Schools get sponsorship money from Smokefree and can lose that sponsorship if anyone smokes at anytime on the school grounds.
WTF is social marketing? Social marketing is a complete misnomer, there is no market, no product or service being sold. They are taxpayer funded, government organised, specifically branded, 'awareness campaigns'. Now, Lance, let me introduce you to a breed even worse than "thundercunt." The type who will say, "Tut, tut. It's so unseemly and uncouth for you to get so angry. Why, that's even worse than why you got angry. Which was ... oh dear me, what was it again?"

Fuck 'em, they sound like the type of people that have never learned the value of focused anger. Disappointing to hear of an Objectivist movement devoted to that, it sounds more like something you'd hear from the feminazi movement e.g.: "Expressing your anger is a form of emotional violence" or some such rubbish. Unapologetic rage where it's due I say!

is funny how people are shocked when someone gets angry about important things, Lindsay.

I am watching CloseUp with a story about a dairy owner who was robbed.

It reinforces the need to follow the Americans in allowing people to carry weapons to defend themselves... (against members of the feral underclass)...but gosh, the grief I have just experienced from various guests!

People saying "oh, what does it matter?" and "oh come on Elijah, do not get carried away"...gosh!

I shut them up with the question "How many dairy owners holding guns have been robbed?" Eye Sticking out tongue

Just amazing at the conformity and wimpy attitudes of most people...the desire to be 'nice' and 'nice people' do not rock the boat and call a spade a spade!

I know this sort of person. I bet he wakes up in the morning feeling faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarking grand! "I'm off to save humanity from themselves honey! Don't wait up, and don't run with scissors". I bet these cunts hugged themselves to sleep with a smug fucking grin on their face when they realised just how much they could get away with, all for the good of humanity.
Utter utter utter utter utter bastards, filth, slime, scumbags, worms, pricks, sanctimonious thundercunts!*
I don't know whether I want to puke, cry or break something.

Man, am I thrilled to see someone else unashamed of his boiling blood.

There's a whole wing of the Objectivist movement devoted to that, believe it or not. Smiling

I know where you're coming from.

Anti smokers (the kinds who want to turn their opinions in to law) are cunts, there's no other way to put it. In the stuff article you posted they talk about protecting kids but that's just not what it's about for most of them. I'm convinced of that.

A year ago I was walking through a public school as a short cut to get home, I was smoking. It was about 8 30 am in school holiday time. Someone who obviously worked at the school was coming through the gate to catch up on paper work or something. Here's how the exchange basically went:

Her: Can you read?
Me: huh?
Her: {points at a sign that says smoke free zone} no smoking.
Me: {tempted to say, 'no I can't and funnily enough I went to this school' but...} oh, yeah sorry.

I kind of freeze up in situations like those, partially because the obnoxiousness of some people can really throw me off sometimes and partially because I'm just not very confrontational with people I don't know but I shouldn't have backed down, it was ridiculous. That policy was put in place because non smoking parents don't want their kids to have to be around smokers. Discounting the fact I don’t think any public school should be able to pass virtually any kind of policy, I am fine with that reasoning, I think it' valid and if it were private property I'd be down right for it. But on this occasion there wasn't a child in sight, he knew it wasn't hurting anyone but she saw an opportunity to be a bitch and she jumped on it because anti smokers get wet when they see an opening to pick on a smoker. It sounds paranoid but I truly do believe this is what all of this policy making is about, picking on people. Smokers just happen to be a convenient target at the moment.

And they will eventually try and ban it all together. Don't pretend the day when they tell us we can't smoke in our own house isn't coming. The Maori Party is already looking in to that.

From the article that Sandi

From the article that Sandi linked to:
“We have a tremendous opportunity here. We need to pass as stringent a law as we can, I would like to make it illegal,” said Councilman Dave Warden. “What if every city did this, image how many lives would be saved? If we can do one little thing here at this level it will matter.”
Jawdropping!

*Thundercunt:The pinnacle of all English swearwords, thundercunt is phonetically, spiritually, grammatically, and socially the worst thing you can ever say, it should only be used in times of extreme need.

At first glance, I figured Belmont was some Kiwi town and shook my head in dismay at such stupidity. Then I realized it was in fact a U.S. city, and my jaw almost hit the desk.

They've got it planned out right down to the specification of single-family, detached residences. What if you buy an apartment? That is private property! If they would just let the goddamned free market do its work, there would be plenty of landlords who would offer both smoke-free and smoke-friendly buildings -- and I guarantee both would have waiting lists.

What a fucking joke America has become.

Lindsay has repeatedly

Lindsay has repeatedly warned us that this will be the outcome. Give them an inch and they will take a mile.

This is exactly how dhimmitude and apologists are selling us out to Shariah Law.

Belmont to be first U.S. city to ban all smoking
By Dana Yates, Daily Journal Staff

Belmont is set to make history by becoming the first city in the nation to ban smoking on its streets and almost everywhere else.

The Belmont City Council voted unanimously last night to pursue a strict law that will prohibit smoking anywhere in the city except for single-family detached residences. Smoking on the street, in a park and even in one’s car will become illegal and police would have the option of handing out tickets if they catch someone.

The actual language of the law still needs to be drafted and will likely come back to the council either in December or early next year.
