Gay Republicanism and other crimes of the heart- straight from Idaho.

Here ye, here ye! Larry Craig- long-standing champion of family values, devoted father and husband, devout Christian, and staunch Republican has fallen head-first out of the closet!

Here in Idaho, of course, Larry Craig is a familiar name. He's been involved in politics here since the late '70's and is a fixture at the state capitol in Boise. All along, he has made couragous public stands for traditional Idaho values: racism, sexism, homophobia, and instituationalized poor-people-fucking. He was a fan of good, clean fun- always up for a rousing game of blindfolded "pin-the-tax-break-on-the-corporation". (first made popular by Ronald Reagan in '81.)

But that's not all he believes in: he apparently has also stood up (or knelt) in favor of hot, hot, man-on-man airport bathroom action. To me, this hardly befits a U.S. Senator; surely a man in his lofty position should be able to simply pick up the secure line and order himself some tanned and oiled entertainment in the comfort of a 5-star hotel. I wouldn't even object to my tax dollers supporting a harmless gay romp for our elected representatives- hell, they deserve it after campaigning so hard for my vote.

But doing what comes naturally (obligitory bad pun) in this case becomes a smidge difficult when one has built his whole career around bashing and demonizing the very thing that you are. I speak of several prominent Republicans this year alone- Mark Foley and his adventures with an underage congressional page, Ted Haggard and his meth-fueled visits to a male prostitute, and now our very own Larry Craig.

In a way, I'm proud that it was him. For years, I've read about the shameless politiking that goes down in Washington and the nation as a whole- the gross incompetencies perpetuated by the Bush Administration, the ho-hum scandals of the Clinton years, and the lethargic squandering of our first "victory" in the Middle East by Bush 1st. Idaho never had anything to do with it. We more or less sat around, faithfully Republican but at the same time not downright discusting. But now- now we really have something that puts Idaho on the map!

Just check out the web. Open the papers. Flip on the cable TV. People across the nation are a-twitter over the prospect of Idaho emerging from the potato field to take it's rightful place in the array or Republican hypocricies and failures. I can almost hear the "I-da-ho... no, you da ho!" jokes being resurrected from coast to coast. Yes, Idaho is indeed recieving it's long-overdue turn in the spotlight.

Larry Craig's anguish sustains me.

Poor

old libertarian (small 'l') Larry Craig has resigned.

Cannot help feeling sorry for him and thinking he will be a great loss to the Senate, rather like when Jesse Helms retired and no one was left to call a spade a spade...(literally Eye in many cases).

His likely replacement, Jim Risch, is a good man.

His sole act during the 15 minute "James Risch Era" as Governor of Idaho Sticking out tongue ...was to slash Property Taxes (what Americans call rates) and to hold a referendum asking property owners if they agreed with their taxes being cut Eye

you're welcome.

And I don't think much of what you said contradicts objectivism. It just happens to be a topic which would go down very well with lefties.

Good Evening

Hello everyone....first off, thank you for responding! I posted this in the banter section because I'm fully aware that some of my post contradicts Objectivism. But I simply couldn't resist writing this because 1) it's always fun to poke fun at home-grown scandals that have captured that nation's attention, and 2) several friends encouraged me to post this piece where it would get some atention.

For the record: it's not that Larry Craig is gay (or even bisexual, which is a possibility)....it's that he's a hypocrite. Some of you have pointed out that the reason that gay rights activists havn't lifted a finger to help him is because Larry Craig is a man who's spent decades building a political career based partially on marginalizing gays. I think that we can all agree that for the altuisticly helping someone who is only out to harm you and your interests is an irrational move at best.

Well...

If you as a gay man can see him in that light I can hardly tell you you're wrong. But for me personally it's hard to view a man who's for marriage segregation and favoritism in tax policy as a libertarian, small L or otherwise. You don't need to be on my side across the board for me to endorse you but you must to be on my side on at least 90 percent of the main issues.

Matty, gosh...I knew someone was going to bring that up Sticking out tongue

If Senator Craig is gay (and he may or may not be) his behaviour in recent years has been hypocritical, I agree.

However, I have watched him on C-Span a number of times making speeches in the Senate and been in total agreement with what he says...and...ummmmmm...do not want to condemn him just yet.

He regularly weaves the words 'freedom' and 'libertarian' (small L) into his speeches and we could consider him fraternal to some degree.

I agree with you that there's nothing wrong with being gay and a republican or a national party member or a general conservative or whatever and I agree that many gay rights activists have unfairly lumped their movement with socialism.

But surely there's a difference between simply being a gay republican and being a gay republican who toes the anti gay party line while hiding in the closet (or the bathroom cubical in this case Eye)

I think in this case gay rights activists, regardless of their other political leanings, are completely justified in calling this guy out for being the hypocrite he is.

is correct that gay activists seem to think there is something sinister about 'Gay Republicans'....just like Negros have a problem with their people who are Republicans.

We have a similar situation here with two incredibly 'wet' dullard Labour MPs who are gay and inexplicably revered by the gay community, yet the gay National MP (who was a party boy and promiscuious shagger in a previous life by all accounts) is not considered 'legitimate'.

With regards to 'Corporations', they are not legal fictions but considered legal persons (as established in Salomon v Salomon and Co back in the 19th Century).

The reason for a Corporation existing is it is a practical way to raise money from a large number of investors (or at least have the option of doing so).

Hmmm...

Why would gay advocates come out in support when the guy is denying that he's gay to begin with?

Corporations shouldn't pay taxes and neither should middle class or working class people. Giving corporations special tax cuts is just as bad as the Dems giving rich people un fair tax hikes. And I don't think the Jefferson comparison is fair. It's not about political bias it's about SEX. Craig’s scandal gets more ratings even if it is a pettier kind of hypocrisy. Besides the media didn't exactly yawn, I saw it on CNN, all over fox and on the daily show.

As for gay rights advocates: They're not defending him because he's done nothing but try to hold them back for his own political gain.

Fuck Larry Craig.

When a Congressman William

wngreen's picture

When a Congressman William Jefferson, Democrat Louisiana gets caught with bribes in the form of cold hard cash in the freezer, the media yawns. After all, it isn't hypocrisy for a liberal to take money from people. I'm no Republican, but what is with the 'corporate tax breaks' crap? Corporations shouldn't even pay taxes! They are legal fictions and just ways of taxing consumers and stockholders. After all, corporations, when faced with increased costs in any form, pass those costs on by decreasing profits and paying less dividends, or hiking prices to offset the revinue. But lets not get tangled in the bushes

The real story in this scandal is -- where are the gay rights advocates? They should be standing up and defending this low life! After all, they have done so in the past (of course when they were Dems -- oh wait!).
