There are plans afoot...Submitted by Lance on Fri, 2007-09-07 10:28.
Extracts from a couple of days brainstorming: Back Off A temporary organization formed for the express purpose of uniting likeminded freedom lovers under one pro-freedom banner to deliver a message to the incumbent and future governments of New Zealand that enough is enough and it is time to Back Off. With powerful and influential groups like ASH commending and supporting recent draconian suggestions coming from the Oceania Tobacco Control Conference, the imminent mandatory mass medication of the New Zealand population with folic acid, and the increasingly pervasive nature of health legislation as a whole in New Zealand, it is time to make some noise. The main thrust of Back Off is to challenge the horrifying nature of the New Zealand government’s campaign against self ownership –an individual’s sovereignty over his own body. The goal of Back Off is to bring as many freedom loving people in New Zealand together at one time to step forward and tell Nanny State, peaceably and simply to ‘Back off’. I want to see that message imprinted in the minds of the current and future governments; I want to see it become as much of a catch phrase as ‘nanny state’ itself is now. If this could be pulled off with the right support, publicity, timing and marketing, a campaign like Back Off would give two simple words for all New Zealanders to use that could carry the full weight of a protest march, and everything Back Off as a campaign represented. Imagine if you will, irate callers on talk back saying that nanny state needs to ‘back off’, political bloggers using it every time nanny tries to introduce anti-freedom legislation, hell maybe even by opposition parties in the parliamentary debating chamber, each time invoking that one day, that one protest, that one very clear message.

Matty, cause and effect...
Matty, cause and effect... if not for the existence of SOLO I wouldn't be doing this at all. I'm wondering if the numbers are big enough, to simultaneously stage something in Aucks/Wells/Chch?
Elijah, yep I agree on the whole 'fuck off' carrying the connotations of mindless nihilism.
if the notion of personal freedom and non initiation of force, etc, is to really start swaying action at a meaningful level, in terms of numbers of people, and being able to not only halt new laws being created, but rolling back existing ones, then that is the group from which the noise of this slogan must register the highest.
Yes/no?
This is actually one of the hardest parts, how much do I want to compromise on 'freedom' to attract numbers? Some of these people will support one aspect but not another yadda yadda etc etc. I decided that for it to mean anything at all it had to encompass all of the 'sovereignty over your own body' angle. I'd like to see a ripple effect though, spilling over into property rights and free expression.
<i>I would not be keen on
I would not be keen on the 'F' word as it is a bit..ummmmmmm...'working class'...
If that group exists as some sort of collective (and I don't really think it works in NZ, well, not all that well), but anyway, if they do, then if the notion of personal freedom and non initiation of force, etc, is to really start swaying action at a meaningful level, in terms of numbers of people, and being able to not only halt new laws being created, but rolling back existing ones, then that is the group from which the noise of this slogan must register the highest.
Yes/no?
Yes
I would not be keen on the 'F' word as it is a bit..ummmmmmm...'working class' and bordering on mindless nihilism.
'Back Off', however, is much more dignified and to the point, not to mention irrefutable!
Either way...
Whatever name you decide to put to it Lance, I think the entire SOLO community owes you debt of gratitude for actually putting yourself out there and taking action. I'm in Christchurch so I'm hardly in the center of things but if there's anything I can do from afar be sure to let me know. I would be eager to help as much as possible.
Certainly a threat, a threat
Certainly a threat, a threat of non-stop campaigning against them if they don't 'back off', which while it sounds a little weak, I'm not so keen on armed revolution just yet
.
It depends what effect you
It depends what effect you are after, IMO, "back off" implies a threat, "bugger off" implies an insult and "F**k Off" implies contempt.
What I do like about 'back
What I do like about 'back off', or the less media friendly 'fuck off', compared to 'bugger off' is that 'bugger off' is more of a simple direction to go away. Whereas 'back off' conveys 'get away from me'.
It's all in the delivery
It's all in the delivery
and I think 'back off' could be delivered in just the right way. It's a good point though, and while I could certainly pour enough frustration and contempt into saying 'back off' so as to make the message explicitly clear, perhaps something like 'bugger off' could work better.
Yep. Yep, like it.
And like 'Fuck Off' even better, to convey the correct amount of contempt and frustration. Plus it would get the young'ins on board.
Seriously, 'Back Off' is just not quite there; I don't want them to simply back off, I want them to fuck off, as in completely.
Or 'Bugger off', thanks to Toyota paving the way, would get past all the sensors.
