Sharing the misery

Thought I'd share with y'all that I am going today to swear in front of a notary that I am so religious that I can't vaccinate my child. Otherwise, the state of GA won't let her private Montessori school (where lots of parents don't vaccinate and the school couldn't care less) enroll her as a student.

So, I am going to be a Jehovah's Witness. They apparently have the right to make medical decisions for their own children because God tells them what to do. I on the other hand do not have the right since I only based my decision on scientific research and my own values (based on the facts of reality and my generalizations from those facts). So, Jehovah's Witness I will be.

It's amazing how much lying I've had to do already in her short 4 years to prevent the state from revcrsing my decisions.

*sigh* you're right ...
but at the end of the day I see that happy face in front of me and I smile again - and know it was worth it keeping that happy face in front of me another day *grin*

PS: I found other moms with similar 'issues' - bucking the system is the same if you do it for one child or five - and the other four moms get a day off per week Smiling

on topic really

Thanks, Vera. It is really hard to have to constantly buck the system and try to figure out just how to get around all the bullshit.

on topic a little?

I'm not really interested in talking about the vaccines themselves. People can feel free to research and weigh risk and benefits for themselves.

But trust me, if the Islamofascists come up with a pertussis bomb or a bioweapon filled with measles, we'll get vaccinated real quick. Smiling

And Robert, the first combo DTP shot (diptheria, tetanus, and pertussis) is given at 2 months. Tetanus is one we'll probably get later, especially if Livy gets involved in more outdoor type activities.

Congratulations :)

for 16 years I've been lying, cheating, forging documents, done anything necessary to protect 'my children' from this state (and society) - two of them are now old enough to do so on their own Smiling
it's not my favorite way of 'fighting back', but sometimes changing laws, morals, opinions takes longer than I have and I won't fight those wars on my children's back
the one thing I never had to do was lie to my children - keeping their reality - and rationality - intact ... if that means 'creatively interpreting legal and moral reality' so be it Sticking out tongue

I didn't get the meningitis vaccination

Matty Orchard's picture

Not because of any scientific reasons (although I had my concerns about how little it had been tested) but simply because I didn't approve of the scare tactics Claudia mentioned. They showed us this ghastly video about how terrible meningitis is, grossed everyone out with pictures of amputees and people with all sorts of other deformities and then inform us that the symptoms are red burning eyes, stiff joints and other very 'flu like' symptoms. They tell us this in the middle of winter! Every day my class mates were running around scared they had meningitis because they found a rash, or their legs were kind of stiff this morning, or they...*gasp* felt like they had the flu!

I didn't want to legitimize the scare mongering by getting the shots.

Actually,

It is often vaccination that gives a false sense of security as when the child becomes ill, parents and doctors rule out diseases that the child has been vaccinated for.

Like this case.

Thanks for the link Claudia

Thanks for the link Claudia but a published reputable journal or report would be needed for me to form an opinion regarding your post.

Sandi...

it depends on which vaccination it is.

In the last two years NZ has waged a huge vaccination campaign against Meningicoccol B. What a load of hooha. The government stressed that the country had an "epidemic" which went against the fact that the disease was significantly on the drop according to other researchers, not members of the Labour Party.

All our children came home with a permission form with a picture of a little baby gone black with death and illness, an image they found very disturbing. The message was, if your parents don't let you get vaccinated, this is what will happen to you. It was disgusting. Government scare tactics aimed at our children and all the susceptible neurotic Mummies.

Some of the deaths in South Auckland happened to be children who HAD received the vaccination - of course this never got talked about.

Meningococcol B is a poverty disease mainly infecting poor ethnic communities. There was no way the government would break PC protocol and admit this, so even schools in wealthy, white areas were pushed to vaccinate. I do not know one single person, who knows one single person who knows any person who actually had the disease, let alone lost a limb or died.

The efficacy of the drug was largely in question and it had been rejected by America and GB, it was not even used in Norway where it was developed, but our Ministry of Health purchased it cheap. They had been advised to trial it on 5% of our children. Another thing they ignored. They went ahead with a full NATIONAL campaign for ALL children. I do not believe that vaccination was perfectly "safe," and I certainly don't think it was necessary.

Fortunately, in NZ, such matters are still voluntarily in the hands of parents and none of my children or nieces and nephews received it.

Have a look at this

Science

Sandi's picture

Kelly, I must throw in my opinion here because you are being hypercritical and perhaps don't see it.

Since you base your opinion upon scientific research as opposed to religious doctrine, why do you shun the benefit of science and not vaccinate your child?

Serious diseases have been virtually eradicated in western countries because of vaccine. My view is that people who don't vaccinate their children are living in a false sense of security, the same false sense of security that freedom exists and does not need to be fought for.

If I could offer advice for you to consider Kelly it would be this.

Just what if Islamic fascists actually got off a nuke in the USA, or managed to inflict some sort of biological affect on a city. Perhaps there might be another depression, hurricane Katrina, an earthquake, a natural disaster or war. You might have a survival kit, but if you are not inoculated for diseases, which are the major cause of death following a disaster, then you and your child will be starting the race for survival by being severely handicapped.

Scientific research has deemed vaccinations to be safe, Sure there is a risk, but it is so minimal that it falls below the risk you take when you and your child board an aircraft.

The mere fact that there are other children who are at this school who are not vaccinated, increases the health risk of your child.

Finally, you must be very resolute regarding your decision to not go with science and associate this matter with religion. I personally just couldn't do it.

Risk

Suma's picture

It may be more of a PITA if the JWs get ahold of the statement.

I wouldn't worry about any

reed's picture

I wouldn't worry about any risk, people change their beliefs all the time, you can be a JW for an hour and nobody can prove otherwise. It's funny though, I didn't think JWs would swear an oath. Also noteworthy is that NZ JWs will accept vaccinations - just not blood.

I thought most places in the US got rid of compulsory vaccinations because of the vaccine damage lawsuits. Is that incorrect?

Kinda risky...

When all one needs to do to find out you're an Atheist is give your name a quick google.

Lying to the government...

Robert's picture

... isn't a big issue. The bastards lie to us all the time.

I personally have no issue with vaccinations. Hell, I'm applying for a job where I will be part of a team developing one.

Not all vaccines are made equal and you should look into each one you are considering getting.

Two I would absolutely recommend are tetanus and TB. Both of these can be given when your child is old enough to understand why they are a good idea and what the process entails - say 10 years and up.

TB is a disease that you will encounter more as immigration increases and it's coming back in nastier drug-resistant forms then ever.

Tetanus is an important one because the bacteria is found in dust and the treatments for Lock-jaw are pretty extreme - and include a tetanus shot anyway.

Just something to add into the scales when you and your daughter are weighing options.

Curious

Kelly,

What are these vaccinations for? Can you also point to the corresponding research?

Thanks.
