In the spirit of rambling mad paranoia

So someone mentioned the Fabians to me in passing the other day. Scary sounding outfit according to Wikipedia:

"The Fabian Society is a British socialist intellectual movement, whose purpose is to advance the socialist cause by gradualist and reformist, rather than revolutionary means. It is best known for its initial ground-breaking work beginning in the late 19th century and then up to World War I. The society laid many of the foundations of the Labour Party during this period; subsequently, it affected the policies of newly independent British colonies, especially India, and is still in existence today, one of 15 socialist societies affiliated to the Labour Party. Similar societies exist in Australia (the Australian Fabian Society), Canada (the Douglas-Coldwell Foundation and in past the League for Social Reconstruction), and New Zealand."

A chapter in New Zealand...hmmm I've looked around on the interweb and can find passing mentions of them, but damned if they have a web presence, unlike their UK counterparts. The reason I mention this is this article from the UK site:

Compulsory voting at elections was the most popular measure to bring more democracy to Britain in a poll held at the Fabian Democracy Day conference.

If there are nut jobs like this operating in NZ, I'd like to know about them and keep an eye out for this kinda stuff, they seem to keep a low profile though. Scary shit man!

Or am I just a paranoid Sticking out tongue

said Your idea of democracy is a convoluted one, at best, and simply instills the same sort of class system of old Britain, self-deluded in its thinking it to be a "free society" and, over time, simply continuing a cycle of poverty and oppression ....to which I reply...YES!

Far from being self deluded, the only time in history Britain was genuinely 'free' was when the libertarian Whig Aristocrats were in Government, and during the time of Lord Palmerston (who bluntly refused to bother governing).

The 'poverty and oppression' perception of 19th Century Britain is also a myth created by Karl Marx and Charles Dickens, and hard to equate with the trebling of living standards courtesy of the Industrial Revolution.

Democracy?!

Your idea of democracy is a convoluted one, at best, and simply instills the same sort of class system of old Britain, self-deluded in its thinking it to be a "free society" and, over time, simply continuing a cycle of poverty and oppression.

You seem to be an intelligent man. Where are your thoughts coming from?

As for the Fabians, while I don't agree with compulsory voting, perhaps I will join, if Elijah's idea of government is the alternative.

She's a Fabian? Makes sense

She's a Fabian? Makes sense I guess "compulsory voting" would be right up her alley.

That there are people that sit there one day and think "Aha! I have it!" and suggest "compulsory voting" scares me.

Compulsory

voting! Shocked ...gosh...whatever next?!

As I have said before, I favour going the other way and disenfranchising most people, taking the voting population back to where it was before the Reform Act of 1832, which in a modern NZ context would disenfranchise those with net wealth of less than $1 million.

This means the Libertarianz would hold around 45 seats in Parliament and 'real' democracy would occur for once! Smiling

Helen is a Fabian!
