If you want to be a success...Submitted by Elijah Lineberry on Sat, 2007-09-22 08:38.
...abolish treats, luxuries, special occasions and things of a similar nature. This may sound strange coming from me but I am quite serious for a very simple reason...namely that you should abolish all of the above by living like that all the time. I consider a person to be an abject failure in life if there is such a thing as a 'luxury' [special occasion/treat] or whatever you want to call it. If you like champange...then drink it! (rather than saving it for special occasions) The self denial most people endure is just amazing and far from being a virtue, is in fact a vice. I ask the question.. 'Why can you not afford it?' Why are you not engaging in profitmaking undertakings so far from being 'unaffordable' such things are as a part of your life as turning on a light? What else are you doing which can be more important than that? ...(and considering the number of times you describe yourself as being 'bored', whatever you are doing is a total waste of time, notwithstanding the lack of profits you are not making) I see Parents with children. The parents admitting they 'cannot afford' something and so the inevitable self denial gets spread around. I am convinced the reason children do not respect their parents any longer, has nothing to do with 'permissiveness' and more to do with embarrassment...and who can blame them? So I suggest everyone stops making excuses for their failures....makes a list of their Top 20 "luxuries" and sets a time limit (say a month from now) when all those 20 things are part of your everyday life. (Stop 'preaching' Capitalism, and start living it)

are some things you could purchase if you were rich!
Most amusing
oh, for those of you who are...ummmmm...(you know)
...the word 'topiary' means plants or hedges clipped into shapes.
My favourite is the 'working guillotine'!
...(for the time I invite a dozen Socialists to a party)...shame they did not include it in the catelogue!
Lord Capital
I see Parents with children. The parents admitting they 'cannot afford' something and so the inevitable self denial gets spread around.
What must the children think of their parents? to look at Mum or Dad and think "loser" must be heartbreaking
This is not very accurate. Because I've had to say "can't afford it" to my own children along the path of their upbringing, rather than causing heartbreak, it has caused them to find jobs and exercise their own money making abilities.
"Wanna be a trillionaire? Go
"Wanna be a trillionaire? Go for it! Wanna be an epistemologist? Go for it!"
Reminds me of joke, a story, and of a proverb quoted approvingly by Ayn Rand: "Take what you want and pay for it, said God."
Good advice. Here's the joke: Bloke asks architect what he'd do if he won a million dollars. Says the architect, "I'd keep practising architecture until it was all gone."
[Insert laughter here.]
Which reminds me: I was enthusing to a friend one day a few years back that the reason I love architecture is the integration of art and science, of engineering and aesthetics, of philosophy and business...
He fixed me with a stare and said, "Are you sure about that last one?"
;^)

Ha ...I think that if a chap followed my advice they would be a lot more successful.
Michael Caine summed it up well: "money can't buy happiness is a lie rich people tell poor people so they do not get jealous..."
Lindsay, what has Bob Jones done now?
Absolutely, Matty!
And I can think of many who are rich whom I don't respect. Elijah's pin-up, Bob Jones, is one of them.
Objectivism is not about social metaphysics and ostentation for its own sake. It's about using your own mind to identify your own priorities and pursuing them, regardless of social standards and expectations. Wanna be a trillionaire? Go for it! Wanna be an epistemologist? Go for it!
There are some things in life that money just can't buy
Dagny chose Reardon's bracelet over diamonds.
Wealth isn't EVERYTHING
I agree with Sandi. I like your post as a whole but I'm not so sure about the conclusion. Capitalism to me is about the freedom to pursue wealth. If money is not your priority there's nothing wrong with finding happiness in something other than material possessions. I can think of many people I respect that aren't rich.
Who can respect someone who is not rich?
I can and I can also very much disrespect someone who is!
