So, the flying lessons are progressing nicely. I did circuits for the first time on Saturday, a total of six takeoffs and six landings - well, four landings, one arrival (flared too late and smacked down quite firmly), and one series of bounces that added up to an arrival There's a great wee video of the Evektor Sportstar up on YouTube; if you ignore the wildly inappropriate music (that song is only suitable for F-14s) it gives you a good idea of the look & feel of the thing. If you have a hundred dollars to spare (AUD$120 at Royal Vic) you can go for a trial flight & see for yourself how much fun it is. My wife, of course, would counsel you to try helicopters instead (she's currently doing a commercial helicopter license, and was landing autorotations last week). My aim is to be able to do this - needless to say that's a way in the future ... although I've stopped turning green on turbulent flights, which I'm sure is a step in the right direction

Yeah - apparently most
Yeah - apparently most schools won't let students land autorotations for fear of damaging the helicopter. But that simply produces students who are less safe, as they've never really landed with the engine out (or at least idling).
This is one of the reasons we selected PHS as Ande's school. They have a reputation for turning out excellent pilots - and the company founder Ron Newman is a brilliant pilot and instructor.

I'm pissing my pants that Duncan is doing this at all. He's so accident-prone he should never fly a kite, let alone an aeroplane. Be very, very concerned.

I'd piss my pants doing the auto rotation Duncan. Ande must have tits of steel. That forward speed of the heli was still quite a lot with a damn near tail strike to go with it.
But I suppose that is better than just falling out of the sky. Still a scary exercise.
