A Very Belated Introduction

I have been lingering in lurkdom for so long that it seems very silly to be introducing myself to people I know so much about. But then it occurred to me that by remaining (mostly) anonymous, I was depriving the rest of you of the thrilling experience of knowing ME and of course that is utterly and completely silly!

So, hi! My name is Jenn and I live near Atlanta. I have been known to cavort occasionally in the presence of such KASS people as Kelly Elmore and Prima Donna (who will no doubt be shocked by my showing up here).

In keeping with a virtuous, happy life, I am productive in several areas: mommy-ing, writing, running a rental cabin business, assisting my husband with his business, and amusing myself with my own cleverness. I discovered Ayn Rand in 1989, much to the chagrin of my parents and Catholic high school, and haven't turned back. In the last few years, I have been really trying to become more virtuous than ever!

My interests (besides those mentioned above) include literature and history, entrepreneurship, blogging, Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc, decluttering my house, and keeping track of my brain cells. My Super Power is remembering every date ever mentioned to me (e.g., Robert Winefield, I still remember your birthday!).

So....that's all for now. Bye!

Livy: I can't. I'm not five.

Jesus wept!

Sounds like someone needs to put a boot in that elementary teacher's arse.

I often wonder if the 'structures' elementary school teachers put in place are there for the kid's benefit or their own.

Yes, Claudia, I am now

Kelly Elmore's picture

Yes, Claudia, I am now homeschooling Livy and a friend's child. We were having some serious problems with her school. As the kids got older, they seemed less and less willing to let them do as they please, and they pushed them to do certain lessons at certain times. They were forcing the other child to nap, though he couldn't sleep and just felt miserable lying still in the dark for 40 minutes doing nothing. Livy and I had this conversation exactly:

Me: I'm mailing a card to Grandma. Wanna draw a picture for her?

Livy: Yes. (Draws picture.)

Me: Wanna write your name on your picture?

Livy: I can't. I'm not five.

Me: Well, I saw you do it before. If you want to, I'll leave you space right here.

Livy: I can't, Mama. I haven't had that lesson yet.

I thought I would fall over dead. Another conversation happened with the other child along the same lines, so someone must have been giving the kids the idea that there were specific times to learn specific things. Very uncool in my book.

Anyway, we've been out of school for nearly two weeks. We've spent a lot of time with Jenn's family, gone a lot of cool places, and written our names lots of times. We've had some problems with the two adjusting to being together all the time, but I hope I'll be able to help them work that stuff out eventually.

Kelly

Welcome!

Though I myself have been reduced to lurkdom, I hope to rectify the condition soon enough to enjoy meeting, greeting and gabbing on SOLO much more frequently (again)! Smiling

The Jen Zone

Or Jenn Zone?

I'm not shocked to see you here, but rather happy. Smiling Oh, and as for that Super Power, I seem to have a permeation of it, as I remember credit card numbers, license plates -- odd things. I still remember the plate of my high school crush. That's just...creepy.

Hi Jenn...

Robert's picture

Good grief - a blast from the past. I'm agog at your ability to remember dates. Especially considering how much we all were drinking that 4th of July weekend!

Yes, tomorrow is my Birthday. 30-mumble once again...

How are you and yours? Well, I trust.

All the best.

Sounds like...

On the subject of Jenn

Kelly Elmore's picture

I just feel the need to say that Jenn is the coolest!! I want to put a big gold star right on her and on her post! She is my best friend, we hang out all the time with and without kiddos, we are homeschooling together, we obsess over Buffy together, we plan literary vacations for when the kids are older and can be left with grandmas for a long, long time, we double date, she is just the best ever!!!! I am so glad that she is introducing herself finally. She also is a rockin great blogger and is gonna be the big time famous parenting and homeschooling expert in Objectivism.

Yea Jenn!!!!!

Thanks for the welcome, everyone!

Claudia--I didn't have an October 23rd, so now you occupy that spot in my brain. I collect birthdays and hope to fill the calendar with the birthdays of people I meet, IRL or elsewhere.

Mark, to answer your question, I have always had this super power, and it's very strange how it works. If something has a number or a date in it, I can usually remember it without trying too hard (although it's gotten a little more difficult as I get older and/or became a parent). So, telephone numbers, dates, page numbers, etc--I remember them easily. It's very difficult to un-know something like that (especially if it goes in my brain incorrectly).

But I can't remember jokes hardly at all! My husband can remember entire passages of movie dialog or discussions we've had, but I don't remember the specific words, just the general idea being discussed. (Which is really annoying when we have a disagreement!)

Strange, how the brain works. I'm interested in other people's super powers, too.

Oh, and I forgot to mention in my first post that I blog at http://rationaljenn.blogspot.com and that is where you can find most of my brilliant opinions on pretty much everything.

Super Power

motley's picture

Hi Jenn. My first post on here too. Just wondering if you developed your Super Power for remembereing dates yourself or have just always had it. Also does it stretch to remembering peoples names? Nice to see your smiling face on here.

Mark

Hmm... I like a bit of Kim Crawford myself! And I can relate to striving for virtuousness (virtuosity?).

Nice to 'meet' you Jen! Smiling

Cheers
