Site Maintenance 1700 EST

Submitted by wngreen on Wed, 2007-12-05 14:26.

I'm going to take the site offline for a bit starting at 1700 EST. This will upgrade the software used to provide the site and allow me to make a list of changes that have pilled up in the months since the last upgrade. Folks shouldn't notice much difference, though there will be a few cosmetic changes such as a search bar at the top and SOLO Chat featured in the top navigation. I'm still not happy with the chat solution and that is next on my hitlist.

As always if there are any issues post them to this thread so we can get them addressed right away. I'll post a comment when the upgrade is complete.

Google search

Check out the new search at the top of the page. Should search SOLOHQ as well.

Has it come to this... on SOLO???

Visited links in the sidebar

Great catch Rick! You get a cookie. I didn't notice that but it was a simple error in the css that was easily overlooked. All fixed now.

Editing comments

wngreen's picture

Editing comments is disabled once someone has replied to it. This is a major feature of Drupal. This is so someone can't change their comments after you reply to it claiming they never said what they actually said.

Great tip!

Missing comments in "My recent posts"

dinther's picture

Hi William, maybe it is by design but we used to have a list of all comments and blog entries in the "My recent posts" tab under "Recent posts"

Now I only get the recent blog entries. This makes tracking my comments very difficult.

Also a good tip from Willim Scott to use Google to search Solopassion.com

You can actually make a custom google search here that can use ajax overlay techniques to fully incorporate both search control and results in the solo web-site. Of course Google search results will never incorporate recent posts. But an archive search feature would be helpful. The Google search is more powerful and much faster than the search build into the Solo site.

Weird behavior in right column

Rick Pasotto's picture

In the second box of the right-hand column when hovering the 'color' attribute is the same as the 'background' attribute, rgb(69, 110, 159), but only for the 'recent posts' link, making the text invisible. All the other items in the box have a color of rgb(255, 238, 191).

Similarly for the third box. One and only one of the items has the color the same as the background.

When I display the css for the items, the good item shows line 713 as the last relevant whereas that line is missing from the bad ones.

I'm using seamonkey but it should be the same with firefox. I think the problem has something to do with whether or not the link has been visited but I can't pin it down exactly.

Fantastic... thanks.

I don't know if it relates

reed's picture

I don't know if it relates to the update or if it is just user error but I can't upload a replacement photo.

Oh...

Jameson's picture

No... it's disappeared again... can you fix it, Mr Fixit?

Oh!

Jameson's picture

Appears you've already done that... I can see my edit function on my previous post. Merci beaucoup! Smiling

Okay...

Jameson's picture

No more leap-frogging effect - well done!

Now, if you'd be so kind as to restore ALL edit functionality for those of us who don't spot literals and logic holes until AFTER they've posted... thanks, William. Smiling

Not a bug

wngreen's picture

Once someone replies to a comment it can't be edited by mere mortal users. This is by design. We can look at changing this if it is a problem.

I can't test the leap-frogging effect because it keeps taking away my ability to edit... another bug to exterminate.

Not quite done

wngreen's picture

Glen, Linz, Ross and I are all still not quite satisfied with the way the site theme fared in the upgrade. I will be busily taking their input and trying to get all of the best aesthetic elements from the previous version onto the live site as possible. If things don't look right to you please let me know (clear your cache first to make sure you don't have any artifacts from the old theme mucking things up)

Seconded! Well done &

Thanks, William! Smiling

I just realised that my

I just realised that my flamethrower comment could be read two ways: to clarify, I meant that it's very easy to inadvertently hose a bunch of stuff doing what should be a straightforward Drupal upgrade. At least that's been my experience in the past.

Drupal

Ah, Drupal upgrades ... like gently & lovingly assembling a deck of hand-painted antique playing cards into a convoluted model house, & then topping off the ensemble with a blast from a flamethrower Smiling

William are you ready for bug reports yet?

So far I noticed:

My editor doesn't do rich text anymore even though it is enabled (Tried to switch which doesn't work)

I am using Firefox 2.0.0.11

Well it's 9am here now Elijah, and it's 3pm EST. So 1700 EST would be at 11am NZ time.

How long? An hour

Probably no more then an hour. Don't worry I'll be gentle.
