A New Series of DrawingsSubmitted by Newberry on Fri, 2007-12-07 05:44
For about the last four or five months I have been concentrating on finishing one painting, Venus--and the finishing touches are coming slowly. That happens. For a change of pace, I am working on a series of drawings of the nude interacting with his shadow. There is a lot of play on metaphor, on alter-egos, and light and dark. This is the first one finished in the group. Twin Towers. There is something sad about the piece. The cast shadow reminded me of the Twin Towers, but so did the flash of light, the strange combination of shapes and shadows above; the tallness of the figure and his twin shadow.
This 2nd one, is probably finished, I need to think about it for a few days. It's called: Adam Turning Away. The fig leaf is one of most ridiculous conventions of Christian influence in art--I enjoyed poking fun at it by creating a shadow over the crotch. The cast shadow of the whole figure has a steady-fast stance that I like and the figure is turn away--I see this as a rejection of original sin. Michael

I simply mean, like the fig leaf, it's a method of avoiding graphic genital representation. You show the hand at the angle (like a rapper by the way) at which the shadow does the figleaf's job. Nothing at all sinister
You mean like Ken and
You mean like Ken and Barbie dolls? Otherwise, I don't know what your meaning is.

Artistic device Livia
Just a device so the artist doesn't have to detail the genitalia?

The second drawing has an overwhelming sense of possession about it... the shadow possessing the man. The gigantic shadow effortlessly holding the man in his most vulnerable area... I know that the shadow on the crotch is caused by the man's hand but its as if the man is in the shadow's power but not for too much longer... all he has to do is step away.
Mmm
Better than me but then I haven't spent a life holding my pencil. What's with the outline on the floor shadow? Looks like a colouring-in book. I wouldn't over-analyse them either. Nice of you to display here.

Looks
good, Michael...you have quite a talent there!
Is that what you meant when you asked if I had any male nudes?
"I create nothing. I own"
