Why the skewed population?

Serious question.

We have Sandi, Claudia, Suma, Grace, Karyn (possibly, haven't seen her post for a while), and perhaps one other who posts regularly. Then we have a whole load of middle aged blokes, lots and lots of us.

Where are all the objectivist ladies?

(Qualification: no, I'm not looking for a date.)

  Sorry Jennifer, how

Sorry Jennifer, how could I have forgotten the foodie! Good to see your progress into profitability: congratulations.

And press Hilton for that podcast interview: it would be great.

Present

Prima Donna's picture

I have been absent due to a manic schedule and being buried in financials (you know, that, like, logic stuff) to close out our books for the year -- in which we have become profitable, I might add with not a shred of humility. Smiling

Oh, my car has a racing clutch, and I am able to parallel park with no difficulty. Carry on.

Linz, why was the Hume thread more important?

Suma's picture

Linz, thanks for the summary of the Hume thread. I grok the Hume thread (apart from the cabbage/eagle digression) as being a discussion of a generalization (but too abstract), of which the slave/abortion (maybe the artistic integrity one, but I have not made that connection yet) threads are illustrations. Yet one needs to flesh out the details in each example. So what is served by debating (as you suggested) the generalization? While nice to organize ones ideas, it seems too abstract to throw any light in either (slave/abortion) discussion. Is it not in fact the other way around, each of those examples provides good evidence in support of the generalization, and hence more important.

A thumbnail sketch, or pointer to a short essay, on what I am missing will be much appreciated (though advice to read a pure philosophy book is probably valid, as I haven't read any).

  A good potted history

Mark Hubbard's picture

A good potted history of the Humean thread Linz. I'm going to take a bit of time off between Christmas and New Year - Boxing Day - and read that thread from start to finish. But first your 'Revolution' link, vis a vis, Douglas, as we ended up with people all last weekend (and the one before that) so I didn't get a chance to read it.

As to the dearth of wimmin: what would you expect on a site dedicated to reason and logic and reality and the ability to park a car?

Of course. Stupid of me Smiling

Thumbnail sketch ...

Lindsay Perigo's picture

... of the Hume threads:

1) Dr Goode (boo) says "the proposition that freedom is good is an article of faith."

2) James V (cheer) counters that the goodness of freedom, as of all positive values, is objectively verifiable and validatable.

3) James V and Casey F (cheer) unfortunately muddy the waters and play into the Humeans' hands by declaring that cabbages are valuers (boo).

4) Linz (cheer) and, of all people, Brendan (boo) point out the obvious.

5) Reality (cheer) says: morality is possible only to the species for whom it is necessary (funny that): human beings. Not cabbages. And no need to bring cabbages into it. "Bad for a cabbage" as identified by human beings does not = "evil."

6) As to the dearth of wimmin: what would you expect on a site dedicated to reason and logic and reality and the ability to park a car?

Yes the Humean threads were great, albeit I was at times scrabbling onto meaning only by my finger nails. Dr Good hasn't posted for a while, now I think about it; hope he is still around.

Elijah should read every thread, start thinking and stop being a prize oink.

Here I am. I had delegated myself to the peanut gallery for a while, as per Linz's
call for the Hume thread. I just didn't think there would be 3 more, with the
slavery, abortion and artistic integrity threads all meeting The Case Against Hume. Smiling

Learned a lot though.
Elijah should read that thread and stop pretending.
