Quote of the Day: Church and State

"It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself. Subject opinion to coercion: whom will you make your inquisitors? Fallible men; men governed by bad passions, by private as well as public reasons. And why subject it to coercion? To produce uniformity. But is uniformity of opinion desireable? No more than of face and stature. Introduce the bed of Procrustes then, and as there is danger that the large men may beat the small, make us all of a size, by lopping the former and stretching the latter. Difference of opinion is advantageous in religion. The several sects perform the office of a Censor morum over each other. Is uniformity attainable? Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth. . . . But every state, says an inquisitor, has established some religion. No two, say I, have established the same. Is this a proof of the infallibility of establishments? Our sister states of Pennsylvania and New York, however, have long subsisted without any establishment at all. The experiment was new and doubtful when they made it. It has answered beyond conception. They flourish infinitely. Religion is well supported; of various kinds, indeed, but all good enough; all sufficient to preserve peace and order: or if a sect arises, whose tenets would subvert morals, good sense has fair play, and reasons and laughs it out of doors, without suffering the state to be troubled with it. They do not hang more malefactors than we do. They are not more disturbed with religious dissensions. On the contrary, their harmony is unparalleled, and can be ascribed to nothing but their unbounded tolerance, because there is no other circumstance in which they differ from every nation on earth. They have made the happy discovery, that the way to silence religious disputes, is to take no notice of them. Let us too give this experiment fair play, and get rid, while we may, of those tyrannical laws."

"which were quite funny."

What was funny about them?

Eli wrote:

"I am sure someone found Jon Coster scrounging in Queen

with the rest of his far-now) and offered him a tenner to post on the slavery
thread...LOL!!"

I don’t get it...Oh wait! No, no, I get it! 'far-now' is like a Maori word
for family and Jon is Maori, and he and his family were scrounging through
rubbish bins for material goods and food, like all Maoris do! HAHAHA! Ohhh the
HILARITY!

Elijah deserved everything he got. Jon's criticism - while harshly worded -
was actually based on Elijah’s chosen opinions. Elijah’s retort was just
baseless and racist filth. Fuck him.

"In fact his point of view with the non-profitability of slaves is
also pointed out in Andrew Bernstein's book 'the capitalist manifesto' and is
perfectly valid."

I'm not an economist so I'll refrain from arguing against the validity of
his argument on profitability but it's beside the point anyway. Eli didn’t
mention that slavery was inherently immoral. Now if it were anyone else this
would have probably been let go but given Eli’s previous statements this was quite
understandably picked up on. A lot of people (including me) took his omission
as indicating he wasn’t against slavery on principle. These suspicions were
vindicated when Eli stated in no uncertain terms that he wasn't against slavery
because he cared about the rights of others. Scroll down! It's right there!
HAVING SAID ALL OF THIS, He wasn't banned for his (disgusting) views on slavery.
He was banned for his (repulsive) retort to Jon.

"To forbid his freedom of speech I think is similar to
censorship."

Are you being paid for this Kasper? I ask only because I've read things
you've written before and I know you must know the difference. It's so basic;
this must be a set up. Linz is
repressing freedom of speech by kicking Elijah out for his bigotry the same way
I would be repressing freedom of expression by kicking you out of my house for
pissing on my rug. I shouldn't have to be pointing this out to you; you're
probably smarter than I am.

"Linz you bark at people cuttingly from a political and intellectual
place, he retaliated taking the piss out of Maori culture as we do in
this country quite often"

What culture would that be Kasper?

Please.

nonsense

"To forbid his freedom of speech I think is similar to censorship."

Sheer nonsense, he doesn't own this forum and has no right to demand it grant him privileges to speak.

His post while initially appearing to be funny, displayed a mind and sense of life which was not simply "profits are good" but "profits at maximum efficiency to me and fuck everyone else" are good. I don't doubt, for example, that a thriving profitable industry in child prostitution and pornography could exist - those running it would do well, no doubt the customers (shudder) would be happy, and hey the "workers" would be sustained by the "sacrifices" of the employers.

Anyway, time to move on, the things that appear when i start travelling!

Elijah deserved every ounce

Aaron's picture

Elijah deserved every ounce of abuse he received for dismissing slavery as a moral issue rather than one of profitability. I'm not sure what the ideal level of toleration overall would be for an open forum site, but am glad to see relative consistency here - if Rick warrants moderation, Elijah warrants the boot.

Wait a minute... Eli gets

Kasper's picture

Wait a minute... Eli gets caught in a feud with Jon, initiating abuse at him, Eli retaliates with what is obviously hard liners, which were quite funny. He was warned before, and he settled with the silly comments, but what the hell is a guy meant to do when getting on going abuse. In fact his point of view with the non-profitability of slaves is also pointed out in Andrew Bernstein's book 'the capitalist manifesto' and is perfectly valid.

I thought this was an online community where people express their views. If they are uncouth, yeah chuck em off the staff list, if you don't like them don't deal with them. To forbid his freedom of speech I think is similar to censorship. Linz you bark at people cuttingly from a political and intellectual place, he retaliated taking the piss out of Maori culture as we do in this country quite often. He was harsh. Not uncommon in this "kass" like community.

There is a place for humor

personallydisinterested's picture

There is a place for humor, but Elijah's online character was subversive.  Good call Lindsay, tough love is still love.  I hope you have the time to work with him on a personal level.

Well...

Olivia's picture

I'm sorry to see Elijah booted. He didn't warrant the abuse he received on the Slavery thread and Jon Coster's expression of umbrage was ROTTEN too.

cheers Linz, I hope someone

cheers Linz, I hope someone gives him the help he needs. What an egg

He deserved to go...

not least because he seemed unwilling to honestly address the valid criticisms of his behavior when they were leveled at him by those with cooler heads than mine.

.... you're outta here. Eli, this makes me really sad. But what you just posted about Coster was rotten. ROTTEN. We've extended you every courtesy and benefit of the doubt, but it's now clear you didn't merit it.

This is not moderation, as for Giles—it's the full boot.

Oh

Elijah Lineberry's picture

hardly, gosh...I just found his post so funny..gosh..I laughed and laughed when I read it...I laughed so much I 'almost' offered everyone here a scotch without charging them! Eye (gosh, eeekkkk, not like me at all)

What a load of nonsense he talks...it simply has to be a case of someone putting him up to it!

But, yes, Jefferson does get a bit of bad publicity for having slaves...and shagging one of them.

It should be remembered that Jefferson coined the phrase about a 'complete separation of church and state'...which was famously picked up and used by the US Supreme Court in 1947 (or whenever it was)

"I create nothing. I own"

Um, Eli ...

Lindsay Perigo's picture

I am sure someone found Jon Coster scrounging in Queen Street rubbish bins (as he usually does with the rest of his far-now) and offered him a tenner to post on the slavery thread...LOL!!

I think you just vindicated everything Jon Coster said.

Ha ha

Elijah Lineberry's picture

that is most certainly true, Lindsay! Sticking out tongue

I am sure someone found Jon Coster scrounging in Queen Street rubbish bins (as he usually does with the rest of his far-now) and offered him a tenner to post on the slavery thread...LOL!!

Goodness knows why anyone is giving Jefferson a hard time..gosh...the fellow never did much wrong!

Galt what a thinker!

Quite. I picked Jefferson today because of the hysteria about him on the slavery thread, where hysteria seems to have become the norm. Perspective and context seem to have been lost to rabies.

Thanks for the additional research Liz!

Galt what a thinker!

I must confess I had to look up 'the bed of Procrustes' -seemed kind'a skanky Smiling

From Wikipedia:

In Greek mythology, Procrustes (the stretcher), also known as Damastes (subduer) and Polypemon (harming much), was a bandit from Attica. He had his stronghold in the hills outside Eleusis. There, he had an iron bed into which he invited every passerby to lie down. If the guest proved too tall, he would amputate the excess length; if the victim was found too short, he was then stretched out on the rack until he fit. Nobody would ever fit in the bed because it was secretly adjustable: Procrustes would stretch or shrink it upon sizing his victims from afar. Procrustes continued his reign of terror until he was captured by Theseus, who "fitted" Procrustes to his own bed and cut off his head and feet (since Theseus was a stout fellow, the bed had been set on the short position). Killing Procrustes was the last adventure of Theseus on his journey from Troezen to Athens.

A Procrustean bed is an arbitrary standard to which exact conformity is forced.

Thanks Linz
