Anyone watch Doctor Who?

Yeah, I heard about the show here and there as a younger lad..but then I read an article in ToyFare magazine about it, and decided to check out some clips on Youtube. I was so impressed with what I saw, I borrowed every single DVD you could possibly imagine of it from my library, and was instantly hooked.

This is seriously probably one of the greatest shows EVER made- the ironic part is that, due to it being on BBC1, the show( before its current continuation/incarnation) was VERY low budget...but what the cast and crew HAD to work with, they did. And of course, being it's a sci-fi, the Doctor uses a lot of science, which is very cool.

The only real drawback to the show is an extreme post-modernist slant. I mean...it comes from the UK, after all, so it's no real surprise, but at times it DOES get so intense, it's somewhat painful. The ironic thing is, in one of the episodes, the Doctor refused to destroy his greatest enemy during their creation- to save humanity- and in the process gave one of the most god-awful post-modernist explanations as to why he couldn't do it. I mean...obviously they couldn't knock off his #1 enemy, but at least give a better explanation for it. HOWEVER, that same enemy later went on to wipe out his ENTIRE race...and the Doctor now has a chip on his shoulder over that- deservedly so.

Regardless, as far as I'm concerned, it's one of the greatest shows ever made- and for those of you NOT tuning in...*naughty naughty*!

No I kid- but seriously, yeah, it is that great. As soon as I get a new shelf, and move my cartoon action figures to my garage to put on display there, AND get some extra cash, I'm starting a Doctor Who Display- AND, I'm so into the show, I'm getting EVERYTHING! You name the figure, I'm getting it.

So, who else has seen this great almost 50-year old legend? Smiling

Can't stand it

You've got to tell me what's to like!

On the other hand, my little sister, the brain of the family, loves it.

Seems entirely, and un-interestingly Deus ex machina to me! Just wishfulness and convenient magical interventions.

...you have to be a particular kind of *nerd* to appreciate Doctor Who (at least the original ones)... anyone lighting a cigarette in their SOLO picture might just be too cool and therefore too distant from nerd-dom to acquire a taste for the schlocky sci-fi show. Smiling

I must admit to never

I must admit to never having watched the programme, although it does seem quite popular in some circles.

Elitism, forever!

Doctor Who

...is second only to The Prisoner as the coolest show ever made for all the reasons discussed on this thread. I did a 'Vote for the Best Doctor' thread a little while back and cast my vote for Patrick Troughton as well. The 'newer' guys Eccleston and Tennant are amazing also.

Well, Tom Baker IS the most

Well, Tom Baker IS the most legendary doctor- he's not my favorite though. My two top choices are Troughton and Colin Baker. Patrick Troughton was Dr. #2, and Colin Baker was #6- in fact, they even did a storyarc together, and for obvious reasons, it's one of my favorites.

See, right after Tom Baker left, he "regenerated" into Peter Davison. Peter Davison was likely the most underwhelming replacement for him you could possibly imagine- he was also the youngest Doctor to date, and to this day confesses he was too young to play him at the time, which I wholeheartedly agree with. He recently guest-starred in the mini-episode Children In Need Charity special "Time Crash" with David Tennant...and showed JUST what he could do with age and maturity. He was a HELL OF A LOT BETTER, lemme tell ya.

Now, when Colin Baker took over for Peter Davison, I have a feeling not only was it that the writing wasn't spectacular by then...but I think a lot of the abuse he took was due to the fact of the "aftershock" of Peter Davison, though no one is willing to admit it. As far as I'm concerned, Colin Baker could take the worst script known to man( and very often, did), and could salvage it, cause he was just THAT DAMN GOOD.

Unfortunately, the dumbass BBC blamed the fall of Doctor Who on him, and changed actors to Sylvester McCoy, who WAS quite good, btw.

However, in doing several audio plays afterwards, Colin Baker showed just what he could really do, and fans loved it. He was just never given a chance.

Then, Sylvester McCoy "regenerated" into Paul McGann...and we still need the gap bridged between McGann and Eccleston...

The new Who

Watched the old shows when younger, and have been checking out the new series. I think both Drs. I have seen in the new series do a PHENOMENAL job.

You are either someone willing to suspend enough disbelief for this sort of thing, or you are not. No amount or argument will matter a whit.

Some of the stories seems a bit rushed, but I will say my only real complaint is the audio mix--the music is much too loud, to the point of the dialogue being difficult to make out without turning the television to an uncomfortable level.

Mmm. Perhaps with the Humean lack of grip to the facts of reality, same are actually falling back through time as their bodies progress through time, hence your recent enjoyment Richard. Your mind is your Tardis, so to speak :)

I watched a couple of recent episodes with Christopher Eccleston as the good Doctor and they were great! Seemed to me that the series had lost none of its original magic (or perhaps it had rediscovered it, I don't know).

  I watched most of the

I watched most of the series down to Tom Baker, have virtually seen nothing since. It became just too dumb, script-wise, after him (or I grew up).

But yes, in 'the old days' a great fun series.
