I don't know any other way she could have challenged Islam?
I guess it is the same story. Anyone who challenges Islam will pay for it with their life.
I don't think she was any
I don't think she was any "bridge to reformation", Sandi. She was a socialist who simply wanted less Islam.
"You can kill a man, but not an idea."
Yes she was very courageous and indeed a bridge to reformation.
"You can imprison a man, but not an idea. You can exile a man, but not an idea. You can kill a man, but not an idea."
- Benazir Bhutto
Glenn's link to
Glenn's link to Hitchen's opinion is interesting. Overall this is a disaster: yes, she was far removed from an Objectivist, she was even badly compromised in many areas from her first reign, however, out of the choices in next week's election, she was the candidate most likely to move Pakistan toward liberal (classic definition) democracy (yeah, yeah, I know, democracy bad), and toward a more humanist ethic: a vast improvement over what they have otherwise.
And read Hitchens: apart from anything else I admire her courage.
Rejecting extremism is a total cop out
Until the Qu'ran is re-written, Islamofascism can never be deemed moderate.
Benazir Bhutto
I am very saddened by Benazir Bhutto's assasination. However ineffective were her reigns as the elected leader of Pakistan, and even with the rumors of corruption, she was a popularly elected leader of a Muslim country, where females are not normally considered equal to men, and her stated goals were consistent with Western goals. She wanted democracy and moderation of Islamic fanaticism. That, alone, shows that she stood for something and had a hugh following. Yes, it wasn't enough to save her life, but it shows that not all Muslims even in Pakistan are extremists. Many of them, like Bhutto, reject extremism.
