According to Sue Bradford........

ALL I AM TO ACHIEVE WITH REPEAL is to remove the defence of ‘reasonable force’ which allows some parents to get away with beating their children quite badly, for example with canes, horse crops, hosepipes and pieces of wood.”

"The police legal opinion, sought by Family Integrity, has been used by that lobby group and National MP Judith Collins to whip up fear that good parents will go to prison – that is just not the case"

“Mrs Collins should know better than to buy into THIS KIND OF SPIN, particularly given her experience as a mother, a lawyer and as a member of the Social Services Select Committee.’

“Collins is using selective facts to NEEDLESSLY FRIGHTEN PARENTS from supporting the repeal of Section 59 of the Crimes Act,” Green MP Sue Bradford says.

“IT IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE that, should Section 59 be repealed, police will be running around the country locking parents up for lightly smacking their children. Police have said they will treat each case on its merits and will only prosecute when it is deemed necessary."

Lindsay Perigo highlights the latest law abiding honest citizen harangued by the police, as reported in Samizdat

In brief terms: A father with his two sons aged (2 and 3) and their new bikes. The three-year old disobeys instructions while riding his new bike and careers down a ramp, the younger follows and gets injured. The 3 year old wants to carry on riding whilst the father is attending the 2 year old who has an injured eye and is slipping in and out of consciousness. Oblivious to the seriousness of the situation, the 3 year old insists that he wants to go off riding by himself and the father flicks him on the ear and tells him to shut up while he attends to the young one. A nearby teacher takes umbrage, an off-duty policewoman rings the incident in and in minutes later the honest law abiding taxpaying father IS SURROUNDED BY 6 POLICE OFFICERS..

As stated by the father "THEY WERE GOING TO ARREST ME and were trying to ascertain whether it was safe for the kids to go home with me,"

Given that “the anti-smacking debate was politically the biggest issue of 2007”, one would expect that National members would be hanging out of the honey coated windows on the beehive and shouting their voice of outrage and condemnation.”

Nothing, not a word, not a whisper and not even a sigh of contempt.

Oh that’s right, John Key is “happy with the law.”

He helped procreate it last year, when he and Helen did it side by side, in the scissors position, humping together to produce a great bundle of legal whoopee.

Ok, so what about Judith Collins? Back in 2004 she once accused Labour of being “underhanded in its politically correct plan to ban smacking.”

Judith acknowledges that “more than two thirds of New Zealanders OPPOSE any ban on smacking.

So, why the silence Judith?

National isn't satisfied that ENOUGH honest, responsible, law abiding, tax paying citizens of this country have had their integrity tainted, slurred, abused and tarnished by authorities.

On thing is for certain, the voters are watching the space!
