The Joy of Gubment Health CareSubmitted by Prima Donna on Sun, 2008-02-17 16:48.
I am quickly tiring of the national health care conversation. That is of no surprise. However, when the poignant examples of mismanagement even at the current level of government interference hit home, I cannot help but to rant. For those who don't know, my mother had a massive heart attack over the holidays (she is recovering like a champion!). She was in Cardiac Intensive Care for a couple of weeks, which as you might imagine, resulted in a very large hospital bill. She has excellent private insurance, but instead of billing them for her surgery and stay, the hospital billed the bulk of the charges to Medicare first. Why? Because of her age. Never mind that she's been paying thousands of dollars for a health plan -- we, the taxpayers, get to foot most of the bill, "because that's the way it's done." And people think national health care will *solve* the current mess. HA!

Thanks Ladies!
Thanks Ladies!
Fortunately, it will take a hell of a lot more than a heart attack to finish off a feisty woman like my mother, and that has made all the difference. But her doctor told me to relax about her recovery or he was going to make *me* take the stress test.

Glad to know that your mom is recovering well, Jennifer.
Interesting info on Medicare. I expected things to be quite the opposite, i.e. no matter how much one pays in taxes for Medicare, one won't see a penny of it if covered by private insurance.
The real reasons are complex and the products of socialism
Medicare is the number one reason healthcare is so expensive in this country. Number two is the corruption that has resulted and caused the healthcare industry to encourage universal healthcare. The industry is addicted to medicare and wants as much of it as they can get.
wrong premise
Health care is expensive in the US because of capitalism.
