Libertarianz at Canterbury University Clubs daySubmitted by Ben Morgan on Sun, 2008-03-02 05:23.
On Tuesday and Wednesday last week I run a Libertarianz table at clubs day/days. Handed out the worlds smallest political quiz challenged people on there answers and talked some of them in to signing up to receive emails on libertarian views and maybe organize a social thing at some stage. About 70 people signed up to receive emails which I thought was a pretty good result. Of those who signed up a solid half dozen were already self confessed libertarians so maybe I can talk them into forming a more formal libertarians on campus group. Act on campus were keen to organize joint events so I'll up date you on that. Many of those who sighned up were nothing like libertarians but just wanted to know more about it but I guess that in it self's a good thing. If anyone has some material on basic libertarian principles there practical outcomes and moral justification I would be highly appreciative if you passed it on to me other wise I'll write the email material my self but I thought I'd ask since there are other with far more knowledge and better language skills than me. Bear in mind many of the people on the email list are new to libertarianism and I don't want to send them anything to heavy. If anyone is interested in receiving the emails or attending a joint event with act on campus then please let me know as having as many libertarians as possible at an event discussing libertarian beliefs would be a good idea. I took some time out from arguing with lefty's and tree huggers to go call the young Nat's unprincipled. Had a talk with Rodney and the national mp running for chch central who after listening to my concerns of the nightmare scenario of a greens, labour and Maori party govt (despite national getting 51% of the party vote due to the Maori party getting over hang seats) Tried to talk me into helping nationals campaign. I guess now they can't get the brethren to help out there short of volunteers.

AMAZING BEN!!!
You're making liberty happen with this kind of outreach! As you kiwis say "GOOD ON YOU" for getting the ball rolling at Canterbury University!!! Based on what you described you have EVERY opportunity to build a STRONG campus group> My gut reaction from your report is that you should lead the charge on campus and if ACT or the Nats (or the lefty groups depending on the issue) want to join you on an event over a particular issue then so be it, but with six committed libertarians and a small band of interested people, you can create your own events.
I'll see if I can dig out some of my old materials from my "grass roots" activist days in the last decade, which although US and California-specific, could be used to help with what your doing there. And if you'd like to pick the brain of an experienced (although not so much recently) libertarian organizer from the other side of the Pacific please feel free to email me directly at mvardo@gmail.com.
Thanks roger
douglia is apparently speaking at uni on thursday so I'll try to get people to go to take and maybe direct to not PC blog solo ect though I don['t think you can use the internet as a alternative to face to face.

Excellent Ben. Canterbury
Excellent Ben. Canterbury is my old Uni, and you're just across the hill now (I'm Diamond Harbour), and though I'm tied up with work all this month (I have to have 100% of clients filed by 31 March), I'm away all April (Oz), then needing first two weeks of May to organise a project in the Sounds, (this is starting to sound pathetic), anyway, after that and on an ongoing basis, if I can help just let me know. I'm no great theorist, but reading all the time, so if you would find two heads better than one getting material together, just drop me a line at (mhubbard@ihug.co.nz).
And well done.
[Incidentally, I'll nail my flag to the wall now so I can't weasel out: career-wise I can't do anything in respect of elections this year, other than give my votes to Libz, I have too many commitments, but I'm going to organise my time coming up to 2011 so I can give the Libz two or three months work for that election, if I can be slotted in somewhere? There, can't back out now.]
Pretty good?
Signing up seventy people for a Canty Libz email list is better than pretty good. Even if you never hear from half of them again, you've still got the core a great group. Your half dozen ready-made libertarians can get the rest into line
I'd recommend getting a social event together as soon as possible to capitalise on your success and keep people involved.
If you're looking for some entry-level libertarianism, the Free Rad's cue card libertarianism is a good start. Grab the bite-sized goodness off the sidebar at PC's blog.
Well done on your successful Clubs Day.
