A recent discovery has been made of a woman's voice singing 'Au Clair de la Lune' dating from 1860 on a phonautogram by French inventor Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville.. It predates Edison's first recording by 17 years! Talk about an entrepreneurer. History is fun stuff. The below link has 3 of the earliest recordings, with the first ever sound (if you can call it that) recorded in 1859.
