Hello SOLO!

I’ve been away for a while and my posts here will probably never be as common as they were on my Gap Year again but I thought I’d post a little update on what I’m doing for those who care and I might even post an article at some point, Lindsay’s just been offering me cigarettes for the job and I’ve got half a mind to take him up on it.

I’ve spent the last several months selling car wax outside of petrol stations. Not the most glamorous occupation in the world and the hours were terrible but I needed to raise some funds before moving to Sydney which is where I am at this very moment. Sitting outside a flat in the Bondi Junction, typing away and wondering whether or not I should cook for myself tonight or have a burrito for dinner for the fifth time this week. Burritos are more expensive but there’s a high chance my cooking will be inedible so It’s quite a conundrum.

Anyway I’m here in Sydney for the long term goal of becoming a working actor but right now I’m just looking for a day job so I can’t report many interesting events. My days consist of applying and waiting. How hard can it possibly be to get a silly job in some retail store? Harder than one might expect apparently. If I can sell car wax to random people looking to buy petrol you’d think someone would jump at the chance to have me selling TVs to people looking for TVs or computers or whatever. Life is so illogical. If anyone here on SOLO happens to be the manager of a Harvey Norman store or something give me a buzz will you? Jeeezuz.

Well enough of my complaining, how are all of you? What’s been happening? Anyone gotten married? Had kids? What on earth got in to Paul? Questions are endless.

Anyway, good to be back!

Matty.

Had an experience like that

Landon Erp's picture

It was a group called BCD and I'd just lost my job and my car was in bad shape yet it still worked. Not so much after the two weeks I worked there.

I think the worst day I had was working a 12 hr day and bringing home $15 for my troubles. Top it off it was the middle of summer and I'm the kind of guy who can handle it cold but hates the heat.

Hope things pan out though.

All the best Matty, hope

All the best Matty, hope you find a job.

(Just got back in from Oz myself. Talking to the locals (up the Murray River) the mood there is changing ... of the nine or ten people I talked to, not one could believe Ruud got in, and they all seem to know what's coming. What's the feeling in Sydney?

I agree with you. For people who can excel at it then awesome!! I just hated it with all my heart.

I only met Cam on my last week with Impulse Group LTD. He was raved about for weeks before he came up from Welly. I found him rude and arrogant truth be told. AND GOD, could he not match his suits, ties and shoes! He was a shocker at that. On the other hand, he was obviously very good at sales and very motivated. As a mentor he was the same as the rest of them, he didn't offer any new, revolutionary techniques. Just the same old motto's I was quoted every morning at some ungodly hour over the loud dance music whilst half asleep and hungry.

Funny, I too had my best week on my first week selling 36 cans two days in a row. But I went down hill from there. I lasted a total of 3 months.

Ha.

Yeah the comapny is HUGE. It's not all ar wax. anything that involves face to face sales and door knocking they pretty much cover across the globe. Not many people realise that glorified pan handling is a multi billion dollar industry.

Sadly

Sadly my brother is stuck in the same cult here in Baltimore, only they are selling 'Certs' right now instead of FW1 (summer is just around the corner though).

Hey Shandra

Matty Orchard's picture

Yeah it is the exact same job and I have met Mohi.

Your complaints about Cobra (that's the name of the umbrella company that oversees all of the offices in my case I was working for 'FWF Marketing' I Imagine Shandra would have been a part of 'Impulse Group' yeah?) are very typical and I recognize them from articles I've read before, especially the talking up of the job. Most interviews involve you trying to 'sell' your potential employer. With Cobra interviews it's set up to feel like that but in hindsight you realize you're being sold the job. Cobra has a very open door policy, they'll take practically everyone because without a wage, feet on the street means money in the bank for them.

The hours are as you say unbelievable for a pure commission job. I worked from 7 and finished at about 6 (home at about 8 ). Luckily for me it doesn't rain in Christchurch as much as Auckland so I got off light. I feel your pain though, I've worked in the rain before.

The office I worked in didn't have the tacky 'woo hoo lets be happy!' shit in the morning although sometimes I wonder if that would have made me try harder. My 1st day I made $120 cash (no tax, as Shandra says it's quite a hook and kind of illegal but legally your employer has nothing to do with it, anyway fuck the feds!) from then on I got gradually worse and I can't help thinking it's partly because of the fact that my office changed management and I ended up getting mentored by a nice guy who didn't really know how to motivate people at all. Poor Niel. So I was constantly working these hours and going home with about 40 bucks.

So, what was Impulse like Shandra? Is Cam as good of a mentor as he is a salesman? I'd be interested to know (sorry to all reading this who don't know what the hell I'm talking about)

However Shandra while I, as a guy who didn't make much money, emphasize with your feelings toward the company I do want to say that I don't have ANYTHING against the kind of job you and I worked in. People like Cam and that bastard Mohi started at the exact same level we did and they make a killing. Performance based jobs are just that, performance based jobs. If you're not a great salesman or your easily 'negged out' then you should quit and not listen to the people that keep spurring you on because they want a taste of your overheads, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from giving this kind of job a go. If your good at it you'll make MUCH more than minimum wage.

REMEMBER:

Sales is the highest paying job that doesn't require a degree

and

All the Richest people in the world are on a commission.

Hi Matty

Its not FW1 car wax is it? If it is. GAWD I feel sorry for you!! I did it here in Auckland. Mohit Govil was my boss and he worked us like slaves! Commission only and if you didn't sell you not only didn't make any money for yourself, you would also get rapped across the knuckles when you got back to the office for "negging out" (loosing your attitude)and not making him money. Never mind that you got soaking wet and yelled at all day by innocent people just trying to get petrol. What allways annoyed me the most is how they make the job sound like it's the best thing since sliced bread and you would be stupid to try anything else! WELL. I did! Allways be suspicous of companies that need to "juice" their "employees" up in the morning with V, loud, loud music and "LETS GET POSITIVE" games.

I will finish my rant with JESUS THE HOURS! Could it take up any more of your life!! Saturdays as well!! I figured out with the amount of hours I was working, I was actually earning most the time less than the minimum wage Sad They trick you by giving you your profit in cash everyday. Bastards.

You can do much better than that job! Even cafe's are nicer. Good luck to you anyway!!

Well, Matt...

...if you tire of the OZ for any reason and you're up for the struggles of United Police States immigration (I know they are a pain in the ass but thankfully you don't fit the terrorist profile so I think you could squeeze in), I'd gladly 'sponsor' you. Of coarse, *my own* commission-only job hasn't been all that lucrative for me of late, but these things always turn around...

Good luck with your pursuits, nonetheless! Smiling

"...if you want to be an actor, customarily you should be heading out MY way here in Southern California..."

Two Words: Green Card.

With Australia you can simply go work. It's as if I just moved to Auckland or something. If I could just rock up to New York or LA believe me I would.

And yes Claudia I have no doubt that your daughter had the EXACT same job. It's a nation wide gig. How did she find it? commission only can be a real bitch sometimes although it can also make you more money than you can count.

You know, Matty...

But if you want to follow the career path of Hugh Jackman and the like, you'll end up here just the same!

Good to see you back on SOLO, regardless

Hi Matty

Its great to hear from you. Have you made any interesting observations about Sydney folk that you can "wax"-lyrical?

Welcome back, Matty!

Welcome back, Matty!

Cages. Island...

you forgot the dreaded Spoon.

Good to hear from you Matty... I wonder if that is the same car wax that my daughter was selling outside of petrol stations for a few months. Tough job - rain, hail or shine huh.

Since you're in Oz, why don't you try to get on that show Chasers War on Everything... you'd fit in like a dream.

Hello Matty

I noticed you weren't around. Nice to know you haven't gone the way of Nick. Let us know how you get on in Oz.

You forget ...

I've had the waffles.

Though it's true—women have no place in the kitchen. Problem is, when you banish them they tend to go into the work force. Or even politics. And then look at the mayhem they cause.

Grace cook? Women have no

Lance's picture

Grace cook? Jawdropping!

Women have no place in my kitchen, hopeless creatures when it comes to the fine art of creating such masterpieces as Steak 'n' Ale Pie (with mushy peas)! I occasionally allow Grace to make me some kind of girly aubergine concoction that she likes to cook (I even pretend to like it).

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm in the middle of melting a block of Whittaker's 72% to pour over my Cointreau poached pears. Evil

PS: Nice to see you Matty Laughing out loud

Good thing you returned. I only just realised you went not long ago -it's funny how these things happen...

Oh dear!

Now they'll all be demanding cigarettes!

Good to see you back. Marcus gave birth AND is about to get married. Disgraceful. Lance is looking pregnant, but I think that's just Grace's cooking. Paul just went mad. Shame. Everyone else has been behaving. Or so they tell me. I don't believe a word of it, of course.
