You have quoted Putin bluffing that he would support Iran. What's different about Iraq? Putin knows the US is never the initial aggressor. Post-Cold War, relations and understanding have progressed. US actions are transparent. I believe Putin is not concerned over his security from US forces.

The USSR fell because it went broke. That's a separate matter but lessons may have been learned.

Sure thing Rommel.  So, your plan is to negotiate with a guy you don't trust so that you can blitz Iran with no Russian repercussions? You don't think Putin would love the opportunity to support insurgents in Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan in order to finally defeat the US?  I don't know him personally, but I've got the impression that he would find it hilariously ironic that the US would get caught up in its own Afghanistan.  A few well placed billions on the right arms would make it impossible for us to maintain a presence in the area.  You honestly don't believe that Putin would love to see the US fall like the USSR?  I think he's probably still a little upset about the whole collapse of the USSR in the first place. 

Putin wouldn't gamble like that. Why didn't Russia support Iraq if this was the case? Following your line of thought would get the West nowhere. Behind-the-scenes diplomacy with Russia first then all-out-blitz the bastards.

We are fighting two wars on either side of Iran which gives it the ability to strike back effectively on two fronts.  Putin has stated that Russia would support Iran in any regional conflict.  John would  turn a quagmire into a military defeat.
