Red Wine is Good For You, Red Meat is Good For You - Now Put Them Together

Red wine beneficial for red meat eaters

At a time when the Greenies are admonishing meat eaters for warming the planet and gummints are blaming "societal ills" on "our drinking problem", it is a pleasant surprise (though I'm not really THAT surprissed) that a combination red wine and red meat has a health benefit greater than the sum of its parts.

Well, these seem like benefits.

"Work at CSIRO has shown that lean red meat (which has had the outer fat removed) is effective in lowering cholesterol....It appears possible that lean red meat could diminish the susceptibility of humans to sudden cardiac death."

and

"The type of iron in beef (haem iron) is more easily absorbed and used by the body than iron in plant food (nonhaem iron). This makes beef a great choice for children. Numerous studies show that even a mild deficiency in iron can affect a child's learning ability, while boosting intake improves behaviour, concentration, mental sharpness and cognitive development."

and,

For anyone who's actually interested

I downloaded the World Cancer Research Fund International report published last year titled "Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective".

Given how much research has been done on the link between diet and cancer, I was surprised at how seldom the Panel judged the evidence that particular foods cause particular cancers to be "convincing" rather than attesting to a merely "probable" relationship. Here's the list.

  • Aflatoxins (liver cancer)
  • Red meat (colorectal cancer)
  • Processed meat (colorectal cancer)
  • Arsenic in drinking water (lung cancer)
  • Alcohol (mouth, pharyngeal, laryngeal, oesophageal, colorectal and breast cancer)
  • Beta-carotene supplements (lung cancer)

Now, before you go calling this report's authors publicly-funded fascists delivering the verdict they know will get them more government or UN study grants... oh... wait...

That's pretty damn close to the one I have scribbled down somewhere. I think I got it originally from a Gordon Ramsay show (his actual cooking show not the reality TV series). I use the "Whittakers 82%" cocoa dark chocolate. Maybe swap out the red onions for shallots if you fancy.

Chili and chocolate is an amazing combination -your recipe sounds absolutely fantastic. Would you consider posting it? Please? Smiling

The health benefits of eating red meat

I believe you are. Well

I believe you are.

Well you're wrong.

The article you link to doesn't mention the health benefits of eating red meat.

So? They are known.

Because there are none.

Yes there are.

They're Made Out of Meat

Vegetables give you cancer

Lindsay Perigo's picture

Goode, clearly hallucinatory from protein deficiency, suggests red meat gives you colon cancer. My broadcasting colleague Lloyd Scott got colon cancer, and he's a lifelong vegetarian. Another vegetarian broadcaster, Relda Familton, died of breast cancer, as did vegetarian celeb Linda McCartney. Those bloody vegetables get you from every angle.

Other health hazards of vegetable-eating include Saddamy, pomowankery and a tendency to confuse loud noise with music. Not forgetting anal-retentiveness, a precursor to bowel cancer.

Red meat is bad for you

eating red meat by itself has a number of health benefits

Like colon cancer?

I think, though it is a tad

I think, though it is a tad cryptic, Dr Goode is suggesting that I am misrepresenting the findings of the study. I don't believe I am.

Sure red meat has some downsides, but it does not change that eating red meat by itself has a number of health benefits, or that drinking red wine by itself has a number of health benefits. When the two are combined, the red wine cancels out some of the harmful substances in red meat. So the health benefit of consuming the two together is greater than eating them separately.

Sounds Delish, Lance

A Mexican recipe by chance? I seem to remember similar concoctions in the film "Like Water for Chocolate".

Compare and contrast

Richard Goode's picture

Research on rats using red wine with red meat has shown the drink cancels out some of the harmful substances produced by the meat.

[Research on Objectivists has shown] red wine is good for you, red meat is good for you... [and] a combination [of] red wine and red meat has a health benefit greater than the sum of its parts.
