Quote of the week - Barack Obama

"It is not part of a political strategy. I say it because I believe it - I've always believed it. This is the work we are called to do as Christians."

US Presidential Candidate Obama after announcing his plan to expand the federal subsidies of President Bush's faith-based programmes with a $500 million fund for sending disadvantaged children to religious summer camps.

Obama is trying to reach

Elijah's picture

Obama is trying to reach out to chaps more likely to vote Republican, and being a politician that is understandable.

He is making an error in going after the Christian vote...and he would be better to go after the "fiscal Conservative" Republican vote.

The reason for this is credibility....Obama the fundamentalist Christian is simply not credible (due to the Democrats being opposed to that sort of thing for years)...whereas there is already the "Blue Dog" faction in the Democrat party and it would therefore be (reasonably) plausible.

Compare the messages...

1. "I have always been a closet Christian Fundamentalist" [especially since I became the Democrat candidate a month ago]

....or...

2. "I have informed the House Speaker and Congressional Leadership I will veto a budget not in surplus, or containing a single earmark, and I ask fiscal Conservative Republicans to support me in this"

(Which is more credible and likely to succeed?)

it's still hard to say which

On a more serious side note it's still hard to say which one is worse, McCain, or Obama. How about we don't elect either one. It's amazing that out of everyone in the US these are the best two people for the job?

But the irony of it all is come november a democrat will inherit the biggest, most wasteful and intrusive government bureaucracy in the country's history.... from a republican administration.

Won't happen

atlascott's picture

His core constituents DO NOT CARE what his platform is. Most have no idea WHAT his platform is. They are voting for him because (1) he is black and so are they; and (2) he is black and black is cool and they feel white guilt; or (3) he is not George Bush; or (4) CHANGE is good--whatever that means.

It is actually quite wise of him to take a big step to the right on his policies. No one takes him to task for having no discernible platform, and he will never lose the color of his skin or the cultural trend which has so many side with him whilst being ignorant of his positions on any issues--so why NOT court the right who dislike McCain? And they are legion.

I would love for McCain to win, because he is a better choice for every reason which matters. But it just is not going to happen. Obama could rape someone on the 10 o'clock news and it will not matter.

I also had to laugh...

...at this sentence from Gerad Baker in the times last week.

"If next week he [Obama] named Dick Cheney as his running-mate and revealed that he spends his spare time drilling for oil in wildlife habitats, the only surprise would be that it took him so long."

Hasn't anyone explained to Obama that if he goes too right-wing, he will start looking ridiculous to his own supporters?

Riiiiiight...

But it's the right-wing theocracy we have to worry about, isn't that right, Lenny...? :-/
