Eye to Eye, Again :-)

I just had Willie Jackson on the phone, ringing in person 'cos his staff were too scared to after the last "Lie to Lie" debacle. Anyway, the upshot is, I'll be on this Sunday's programme, guaranteed. It's about Mordi Language Week. Eye

I think they understand the

Jeremy's picture

I think they understand the difference, Mark.  But they would die before admitting it.  Much easier to label libertarians as right-wing, loony-bin Mccarthy-clones than it is to ponder or debate our actual beliefs.

I'm glad they got me

Mark Hubbard's picture

I'm glad they got me rolling my eyes at "right-wing" too.

That seems to be a distinction the political droids will never, ever, understand about  Libertarianz.

Thank you Matty

Lindsay Perigo's picture

Glad the moment wasn't wasted. Smiling I'm glad they got me rolling my eyes at "right-wing" too.

Hahaha

Best Moment:

Jackson: And we'll have to give our kids a good education so they don't end up with crackpot views like Cliff and Lindsay's!

Linz: How come that's written in the auto-cue?

Very funny Linz Smiling

Yes

gregster's picture

That's the problem Marcus, it's the intelligent Mordis who are dangerous. Lucky not too many of these radicals could be called intelligent.

Would not be good if all Mordi spoke solely Mordi - their drain on the state would be tenfold. Is that what they want? Yes - total immersion they call it.

I don't think Willie Jackson believes what he trots out. Like a lifelong Catholic he's got too much vested in it to be frank like his mate Tamihere is.

There is still the theory that they weren't the first here, and they migrated from Asia like Cliff said.

I watched this on the internet...

Marcus's picture

Very good Linz. You hit the nail on the head, it's the tax-payer funding that's wrong.

Unfortunately you were introduced as a right-winger, but I noticed your eyes popping out at the time Smiling

That guy Hawera was not just evil, but also quite intelligent, which makes him all the more dangerous. I think he understands exactly what he is doing, exactly like a modern-day Toohey.

Cliff Lee, former Rotorua City Councillor. My god, where did they find him? He's a no-nonsense type of US Libertarian if I ever saw one!

Yes, I agree with Glenn,

Mark Hubbard's picture

Yes, I agree with Glenn, this show was better than watching the rugby L-and-sey.

More entertaining than the rugby

Sterling stuff, Lindsay!

I posted a response on the Eye-to-Eye site:

With one in five New Zealand kids leaving school illiterate isn't it about time they concentrated on a language that will afford them better employment opportunities? Objectively speaking, Maori is, outside of their own communities, schools and Maori TV, completely and utterly useless.

And these brown clowns want to make it compulsory?!

As Lindsay said, mind your own bloody business! Go ahead and waste your money and your kid's precious school time if you choose, but give me the choice to let my kids learn a language that will help them communicate with the world outside New Zealand.

The moral inversion these debates create is sickening, with brown-nosing dimwits like Linda Ross-Smith bleating on about the "bigotry displayed by your two pakeha guests." The only racists in that room, Hone, were the "Mordi" on the geographical and political left of that panel, who insist on shoving ethnic-based policies -- which are by their very nature racist -- down our throats.

Good on you, Lindsay: the voice of reason indeed! He should be a regular!! And well done, Cliff, who didn't get a hearing on his reasonable point about the Mordi racism.

One more thing... Māori... with a macron over the 'a'?! And whose phonetic invention was that? Honestly, could this culture be any more pretentious?

Regards, Pākehā Glenn

Cheers Linz and Kasper. Much

Thanks Richard but I can't

Mark Hubbard's picture

Thanks Richard but I can't find it on the Internet I'm afraid.

I did find out it played on Maori TV at 6.30pm Sunday, but I found this out approximately 8.00pm Sunday.

Just goes to show, I've got to pay attention.

Funny but chilling

Lindsay Perigo's picture

The younger of my two adversaries could easily turn into a terrorist. He is pure hate ... of the good for being the good. Didn't even try to disguise it.

I agree Liv

Kasper's picture

I think it was the "looking like having fun" and "wit" that really established the rapport that Lindsay had. My household who does not buy into this whole objectivist or Libertarian thing - really liked it.

Very good...

Olivia's picture

You made your point very well and kept sticking to it... "I draw the line at tax payers having to fund it all."

Must be hard not to just stick to the central issue, as so many other points of difference get thrown into the equation in a discussion like that.

You also looked like you were having fun... you and Willy anyway.

Always amazes me how deep the victim mentality goes with these people. They really do see themselves as hard done by and entitled to everything they demand.

There was a blurb at the end

Richard Wiig's picture

There was a blurb at the end of the show saying that it is streamed on the internet, so it ought to be there somewhere, Mark.

Missed it. I think they

Mark Hubbard's picture

Missed it. I think they repeat Eye to Eye though: does anyone know what channel and when?

Unfortunately they don't seem to load it on TVNZ On Demand.

We were cracking up with

Callum McPetrie's picture

We were cracking up with laughter down here in Civilisation also (but more at Lindsay's various witty remarks).

Well done Lindsay

Ben Morgan's picture

"I can't believe they chose that young knuckle-head to go on" your right kasper its a shame they didn't get Tamaeti at least he is capable of expressing his anti-human views in a coherent manner. That idiots constant incoherent ranting prevented a intelligent debate and discussion taking place. "George Bush! George Bush!..." I still can't fathom how someone could come to the conclusion that the president of another country has any thing to do with the NZ governments Maori language policy, what a mutton head.

"We reserve the right to live"

Eye to Eye

Kasper's picture

That show was hilarious! My family was in hysterics. I can't believe they chose that young knuckle-head to go on.
Whats the relevance of Maori language to progressive NZ?
Its out heritage..
Whats the usefulness?
But we are indigenous
Yes we get all that, but what is relevance?
But we want to preserve our culture...
Yes, but what is the relevance of your language?
But Treaty of Waitangi bla bla bla
Yes but what is the relevanc?

hahhahahahaha

What a show of leftwing

Elijah's picture

What a show of leftwing extremism Shocked ...that Rotorua chap...that smart alec show off Hawera, gosh, he is a communist! he requires watching! ...(a protest against Tame Iti's arrest! gosh) Shocked

It shows we need to be much more proactive against these people forcing normal chaps to do things.

One thing I could not help but notice is how a lot of left wing socialism is viewed as 'axiomatic' ..and the three socialists were shocked that not everyone takes it as a 'given' that certain things are just normal.

Well done, Lindsay...(although you should have given that Hawera a good slap)

Told you to stay

Ahhhh...you are home?

Ahhhh...you are home? ...right..gosh...it may amuse you to know there has been a bit of email traffic popping around wondering about that...whether you were stranded in Civilisation (and required a bed for the night)

My kids learn so little at

reed's picture

My kids learn so little at school, I think it would be fantastic if they were taught languages - English would be a good start.

I'd rather they were able to learn Chinese or Spanish but Maori would be better than none.

Keep an eye on Willie Jackson's English pronunciation (that's prənunsiaysh'n).

No issues...

Oscar's picture

with the language per se, unfortunately it usually gets bound up in stone age mysticism, protocol, and culture for which I have no time.

Meanwhile, the Hamilhole bus shelters are plastered with advertisements sporting phrases like "Reppin us hard" and "da illest"...

It's insanity gone mad

Not only that ...

Lindsay Perigo's picture

.... they do it in NZ as well.

2. I'd love to be able to talk to other NZers while overseas in a language that virtually nobody else can understand.

NZers already do, man.  Sticking out tongue

I'm with you Scott

I wouldn't mind learning it either, it's a beautiful language when spoken, it flows kind of like Italian.

Thanks Philip, which is what I was driving at.

Simply

Scott Wilson's picture

Maori language things should not be funded by the state any more than non-Maori language things.

Given the state funds English language TV and radio programmes (and 2 stations), it is hard to say that Maori language programming should not get a proportionate level of funding based on the proportion of speakers. The answer is to get the state out of broadcasting and education. As long as it is in both, then those who want their kids to learn Maori and want to hear Maori on air will demand it as of right, when it should just be commercially provided.

I for one would like to learn Maori (and pay for it) for two reasons:
1. I want to know what the hell is being said by the predominantly leftwing Maori media so I know what is going on.
2. I'd love to be able to talk to other NZers while overseas in a language that virtually nobody else can understand. I have noticed speakers of umpteen minor languages enjoying this privilege, and think it would be delightful.

It's all my personal choice of course, but it would be interesting to have objectivists and libertarians able to release material in Maori.

'Maori'

Peter Cresswell's picture

I heard JT opining on their show this afternoon that in his not so humble opinion, the best pronunciation of the word 'Maori' is given by Monsieur le Perigo.

I think his tongue was only partially in cheek.

99%?

Luke H's picture

"99% of New Zealanders do not speak Maori nor identify with it."

From Wikipedia:

Over 100,000 people, nearly all of them of Māori descent, speak Māori — most extensively in New Zealand. Estimates of the number of speakers vary: the 1996 census reported 160,000, while other estimates have reported as few as 50,000.[7] According to the 2006 census, 131,613 Māori (23.7 percent) "could [at least] hold a conversation about everyday things in te reo Māori".[7] In the same census, Māori speakers accounted for 4.2 per cent of the New Zealand population.

...

The Māori diaspora also speaks the Māori language, most significantly in Australia, where census-data revealed it as the home-language of 5,504 persons in 2001[8] — an increase of 32.5 per cent since 1996. This represents 7.5 per cent of the Māori community in Australia.

Linz,

Although I disagree with the politics of Willie Jackson, I have to say that I am impressed with his willingness to call you again - despite their previous unprofessional behaviour. Bravo Willie, and can't wait to see you on the show Linz.

Letter to TVNZ

Kasper's picture

Please write one. It is really easy to do. You simply go on their site, click 'contact us' and lodge your complaint.
-------------------------------------------------
I wish to lodge a complaint about the amount of Maori language been screened on air at present. 99% of New Zealanders do not speak Maori nor identify with it. Most are not interested in the language and express this by not voluntarily associating or paying for the Maori cultural experiences. A Maori channel is already on air and as with most Maori culture is funded by handouts taken off innocent New Zealander's. The subtitles this week have been a nuisance and I don't believe have helped your PR at all.
------------------------------------------------------------
Why, when we have a Maori channel, do we see increases in Maori culture being infringed on English speaking TV channels?
This is politically correct, corrupt, crap.

Eye to Eye

Kasper's picture

Believe it when I see it.

Idea

gregster's picture

Bring up that Mordi 'immersion' school which got into trouble for allowing too much English, and whether Mordi 'immersion' may amount to literally 'submersion' of competitiveness.

Oh well done! ..gosh,

Oh well done! ..gosh, should be fun to watch...(let's hope the fog stays away) Eye ..ha ha
