Vote Buying Vote Selling

Does anyone have a problem with vote buying or vote selling?

Here I am strictly speaking about an electoral candidate/voter seeking to buy/sell a vote in a general or by-election. Seems to me that this should simply be a contractual matter between two parties, or am I missing something?

So should Helen Clark be able to offer me a $1000 dollars to vote for her, and should I be able to accept it? :)

No

A vote is a vote and an opinion is an opinion. A vote can be cast for whatever reasons and an opinion can't be forced to change. I would gladly 'change my opinion' for cash if some gullible fool offered it to me because that would be easy money. I probably wouldn't sell my vote because it's something that can actually be changed and given away in a real sense.

Am I to assume you don't think people should have the right to sell their votes Mindy? You Liberty crazed Objectivist you.

A vote is an opinion, would you change opinions for money?

Penn Jillette, who is always good value said something to this effect:

If it's really yours, if you really have it and if it's really worth anything, you should be able to sell it.

OK

To be clear, the question should have been "Is it OK for a candidate to buy votes using their own money?"

That part was obvious...

If anyone seriously advocated voting for Helen Clark I would hope Linz makes an exception to his banning policy. Smiling

In the system we currently have I definitely have an objection to vote buying/selling because it's done with my money. That's what I thought you were taking the piss about.

"Under a New Freeland constitution it wouldn't matter how many votes were bought or sold, so knock yourself out I guess."

Thanks for that position.

Taking the piss? About me selling my vote to Clark? Obviously. Or so I thought!

Taking the piss?

The fact that she has a level of political power that makes you wish to purchase a part of it is the problem. No?

"So should Helen Clark be able to offer me a $1000 dollars to vote for her, and should I be able to accept it?"

Whose money is it?

Under a New Freeland constitution it wouldn't matter how many votes were bought or sold, so knock yourself out I guess. Smiling
