"The Government has put forward a bill that would result in grocery stores smaller than 150 square metres losing their right to sell wine and beer...Associate Justice Minister Lianne Dalziel said the bill would be a conscience vote and she hoped it would be sent to a select committee before this Parliament was dissolved."
Why exactly the magic number is 150 and not 147.2 or 151.7 square metres she doesn't make clear. Neither does she make clear what possible good could result from her suggested intrusion. But it does seem clear that this is a blatant attempt at reducing the number of liquor outlets by removing the right of small businesses to sell the demon drink. Never mind that many good hardworking people have bought such enterprises on the basis of its liquor turnover; or that others, after working 12, 13, and 14 hours each and every day, are finally taking a reward for their efforts. And never mind the vast, vast majority of responsible drinkers who would just like to buy a drink from who they dammed well please.
No, "never mind" says Dalziel, who just wants to be seen to be doing something...anything..... while screwing the productive again in the process.
And this from the frigging Minister of Commerce!
