The Sexual Orientation CensusSubmitted by PhilipD on Thu, 2008-08-14 07:31.
“Statistics New Zealand has published a paper acknowledging for the first time ‘emerging interest’ in sexual orientation and behaviour.” I guess, when I think about it, I am surprised it has taken them so long. However, it seems that after a long campaign by gay activists that the Statistics Department is to begin a push to have sexual orientation included in the 2016 census. Nosey, annoying bastards! The department tells us that they discover many important things from this enforced head-count: “for example, from previous censuses we know that: almost two-thirds of the Māori population is under 30 years old; we have many new ethnic communities in New Zealand; we have a growing elderly population; and we are mainly urban dwellers.” Well, bugger me, who would have guessed? But it’s not only the collection of the data that bothers me, it’s that the government uses the data to justify the further spooning out of the taxpayers’ bucks to whomever they feel is in need. So, I can see where this is heading. Having identified that there are indeed 'non-straight' people in New Zealand, the call will come for all political parties to have a Minister/Spokesperson of Gay-Bi-Transgender issues. And, the Labour party will immediately appoint one. Meanwhile, the Nats will re-check the figures to see which way the wind is blowing, and the Greens, will delight in pointing out that they have had one for years while immediately selecting two more co-spokes-folk to reinforce their love credentials. Obviously the need will also be seen for a Ministry of Gay-Bi-Transgender Affairs, and lots of lovely pink dollars to sprinkle over someone’s pet equal opportunities project. And if you think that that would be the end of it, some asexual activists are beginning an inclusion campaign too…

I must confess to never
I must confess to never having personally filled out a census form...(although I gather my parents did one on my behalf in 1986 and 90)...but like so many other things I have managed to be 'under the radar' with this fascist exercise, too.
Despite being a gay man I would find a nosey parker question asking my sexual orientation to be unnecessary on the grounds that...ummmmm...so what?
Let me put it this way...if a large percentage of a certain area (such as Ponsonby) were to say they were gay, what does that achieve?
Will it mean more niteclubs? ..or a new gay brothel? ..or sauna?
and I, of course, have never been to or have any knowledge of such venues.. (*cough*splutter*) ..so a multitude of new venues of this nature would be quite academic as far as I am concerned...(ahem)....but I am at a loss as to what census results of "27.8% of Ponsonby and 0.8% of Temuka residents are gay" is meant to prove or achieve....and what if, as I can personally attest, a certain private school showed results of "83% of pupils regularly have sex with other boys in their dormitory"? ...does that mean the age of consent gets lowered (considering everyone ignored it anyway)? ...
I think not.
I think not because the last thing the authorities want to deal with are statistics showing private school boarders shag each other at least once per day, and the gay population in certain suburbs require more niteclubs/saunas/brothels so everyone can get laid even more often..(which is all 'normal' gay men care about anyway)....because to ignore census results leads to claims of discrimination, but to follow those census results is simply not possible.
On election day...tick the LIBERTARIANZ box...

"No we don't have a Minister of Gender, but we do have a Minister of Women's Affairs. No we don't have a Minister of Age, but we do have a Minister of Senior Citizens and a Minister of Youth Affairs."
I stand corrected on that one.

Which department could legitimately exist to perform these headcounts?
Aren't we trying to strip the bloated old beast to the carcass?
Headcounts
I think LIbz census policy is that the government be allowed to perform headcounts only; and the headcounts should be voluntary. This is useful for electorate boundaries etc.
Although that infomration could also be gained from people voluntarily joining the electoral roll. Hmm.
Another thing a headcount would be useful for is simple police stats like ensuring the correct number of sworn officers per capita in different locations.

Ok, Phillip. The annoyance is noted. I shall use your full name from now on

I'm not to sure what you are getting at in the first part of your post. No we don't have a Minister of Gender, but we do have a Minister of Women's Affairs. No we don't have a Minister of Age, but we do have a Minister of Senior Citizens and a Minister of Youth Affairs.
Yes, of course the census should be voluntary.
"In a free market with state being law, courts & armed forces - should the government have a right to take a census for military and security reasons?"
Slippery slope immediately comes to mind, But good question and I need to give it some thought.
BTW, that one-letter 'p' salutation thing that you use? It's probably just me, but I find it incredibly annoying!

-Herbert Spencer
Well -
They can ask whatever the hell they want, as long as the census doesn't cost us money and is voluntary.

We don't have a ministry of gender or a ministry of age.
You give your sex on the form anyway as male or female, so they are taking it further to say m/f or trans. Do you bonk m/f or do both?
Are you saying Philip that the census should be voluntry? Because I would agree with you there.
In a free market with state being law, courts & armed forces - should the government have a right to take a census for military and security reasons?
Everyone claims to want to
Everyone claims to want to be treated equally, but in reality they want exceptions and to be given more because of something they are, in most cases, born with. It sickens me!
