SOLO-US Press Release: What About My Rights?—Mad MADD and the Drinking Age Debate

A proposal by more then 100 University administrators to lower the drinking age from 21 to 18 has created a firestorm among all the usual suspects, notes SOLO spokesman William Green.

"Mothers Against Drunk Driving quickly denounced the idea as irresponsible and dangerous," Green observes.

"MADD's national president, Laura Dean-Mooney, even suggested, 'Parents should think twice before sending their teens to these colleges or any others that have waved the white flag on underage and binge drinking policies.'

"MADD also touts studies that U.S. drunk-driving deaths dropped after the drinking age was raised to 21 as justification to strip an adult of his right to purchase and consume alcohol. But is saving a life justification for taking away a man's rights?

"No doubt many lives could be saved by preventing folks over the age of 65 from driving. After all, accident rates for drivers over the age of 65 are higher than for any other group except teens who already endure driving curfews, probationary restrictions, and other draconian constraints on their driver's licenses. If it is OK to strip away young adults' rights in the name of safety, surely our seasoned citizens should not be forgotten?

"In the drinking debate it is easy to get sidetracked by studies about preventing binge drinking and drunk driving and lose sight of the real issue at stake. An adult has the right to purchase and consume alcohol. It is his responsibility to do so safely, not the responsibility of the State to forbid him to do it at all. The role of government is not to save lives at any cost, but to secure rights," Green concludes.

Well, in the NY area, even

Urban Parks's picture

Well, in the NY area, even though it is "illegal" anybody who wants a prostitute can get one-from what I have heard, I do NOT recommend it. Stank!

As a teenager, I knew there was a drinking age, but never really abided and nobody else does either. If a great bar gave me a hard time or I needed a keg for a party, I would enlist my cousin's and use their ID.  In fact, it was kinda covert and fun *sigh* I miss those days! My family never presented it as the Devils Work and had the same approach they have with sex "just be safe".

As for abortion...ARG! So irritating. I wrote about it in my blog...I'm so OVER it!

New Zealand did this years

Elijah's picture

New Zealand did this years ago...and the World has not ended.

I must say, one thing about America which never fails to astonish me is how childish and puritanical the place is over alcohol, drugs, tarts, pornography, fornication and abortion.

The rest of the Western World is able to treat these issues in an 'adult' way....so why not America?!?! Shocked

If you met someone at a party, asked them what they did for a living and they replied "I am a prostitute" I doubt it would even raise an eyebrow in New Zealand, but Americans would be gasping and spluttering.

Similarly some teenagers 'tired and emotional' after an alcopop too many gets a smirk and response from 'adult' New Zealanders along the lines of "you have to learn sometime" ...but Americans view it as the "Devil's Work" manifesting itself.

On abortion....we New Zealanders grew up about that during World War 2 when tens of thousands of (ironically) American soldiers helped cause large numbers of abortions Sticking out tongue ...yet (literally) today I was reading an article about abortion in the LA Times which bordered on hysterical!

...gosh, funny chaps these Americans...

On election day...tick the LIBERTARIANZ box...
