Hula Hoops with Barbed Wire on the SeashoreSubmitted by PhilipD on Wed, 2008-08-20 05:22.
And it's art. So says Tracy Emin, who curated one of the rooms at this year's London Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. ‘She (Israeli artist Sigalit Landau) has made a beautiful video of a woman doing a hula hoop routine with barbed wire.’ Isn’t it unbearable to watch? ‘Well, there are scratches, but it’s strangely erotic and mesmerising.’ Erotic? Mesmerising? You sick bitch. But if that's not to your taste how-about, 'the sight of Mat Collishaw’s wonky pseudo-Victorian automaton, featuring a life-sized zebra having sex with a woman in what the title assures us is “the old-fashioned way.” Or "the gory collages of that crazy Austrian proto-Emin Elke Krystufek, who pictures a menstruating mother inserting her fingers into herself and showing us the blood." (Waldemar Januszczak,Times Online.) Not mesmerising enough for you? Not erotic enough? Then there is always that piece of work described as "a hairball of pink dildos." Emin seemed confident that her 'sexed up' room would have popular appeal, though; "The nice middle-aged ladies...I think they can't wait to get into this room." I know, I know, this sort of stuff has been around a while, but I am just stunned that it still seems to be going strong. Is there any sign this type of crap is going into decline. Any sign at all.... Please!

Peter Cresswell on his weblog often includes statues and works of art which are always splendid to read about.
