Today's letter to the editor (Sandi and the Commander would be proud :) )Submitted by Mark Hubbard on Thu, 2008-08-21 02:28.
Bets on this being published?
With my passion for our proud Western Classical Liberal tradition of humanism and intellectual and physical freedom, that noble altar on which so much blood has been sadly spilt to save us from the schemes of tyrants, Abdullah Drury's opining for the conditions necessary 'if Islam is to spread here' amongst our population (Press, 21/8), fills this individual with dread. I realise my detractors will hysterically scream intolerance, and that surely, I contradict myself, but the real debate about the growth of Islam in New Zealand is the contradiction of how long do free men and un-Burka'd woman tolerate intolerance.

Sure they could strike it
Sure they could strike it down as hate speech. You're expressing an intolerance for another culture.
Sandi
That was a good vid.
We'll have problems just as they do.
The spread of islam in Aussie
This is by no means the
This is by no means the first letter I've had in the Press: I've had many. Thus the surprise on the phone call.
They couldn't strike this letter down under Hatespeech laws because at its heart, it simply poses a question.
If it's your first letter to
If it's your first letter to the press, then phoning you to verify your identity is probably just standard policy, Mark. It is for my local paper, so perhaps it is for the press too. Don't forget to do a follow up to this with any responses. You can bet your boots that someone in the Islamic community in Canterbury will see your letter, which probably means everyone will. And absolutely I'd defend you, but I don't foresee any fatwas. You'll probably go on a list, or several peoples list, as an Islamophobe to keep an eye on and to target when the hatespeech laws come in.
Kass Letter - Mark!
The phone call highlights the level of paranoia and weakness within the media........dare I mention intimidation, because they won't!
Methinks the reality of this matter lies strictly between the brazenness (of your balls) in comparison to the more sagacious journalists who prostitute their integrity to an editor in return for a regular endowment of handcuffs and a gag.
Note: The immigration figures for 2006 completely doubled for Muslims. I shudder to think what 2007 will reveal.
Indeed I wish I had the time to find them.
"Who is John Galt?"
No, not that article
No, not that article Richard, but one that it was no doubt antecedent to. The Press article was about how Islam had to change to 'local conditions' so that Kiwis could be converted, rather than the Faith just be reliant on Muslim immigrants.
Bit ominous, I got a phone call from The Press tonight verifying my identity so they can publish this letter on Saturday: they've never done that before. What's up I wonder? Are you going to come and help defend me when the fatwa goes on Commander? After all the battles you, I and Sandi have had, I think the irony of any religous fervour falling upon my neck will get me before the fanatics do
