Unspeakable!

New York Times:

Senator Joe Biden’s suggestion that paying higher taxes is “patriotic” set off one of the first major public tussles between the Democratic vice presidential candidate and his Republican counterpart, Gov. Sarah Palin, on Thursday.

Mr. Biden said in an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” that he and Senator Barack Obama “want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people.” And in an Obama-Biden administration, he said, Americans who earn more than $250,000 should expect to pay more in taxes.

“It’s time to be patriotic,” Mr. Biden said. “Time to jump in. Time to be part of the deal. Time to help get America out of the rut.”

Ms. Palin, speaking at a rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, did not miss the chance to challenge her rival, a 35-year veteran of the Senate.

“To the rest of America that’s not patriotism. Raising taxes is about killing jobs and hurting small businesses and making things worse,” Ms. Palin said. “This isn’t about anyone’s patriotism — it’s about Barack Obama’s poor judgment.”

Re: The guy

I just finished the Wikipedia article on Barr. I'm skeptical that he's a Libertarian-come-lately. However, if you grant the benefit of the doubt for the veracity of his current positions, it would seem he'd leave people free to love their guns, their Jesus, and to hate gays in private.

Don't get me wrong, I like guns, have no issue with gays, and have given up on wishing that Jesus will be going away in my lifetime. What I would like to see going away in my lifetime is interference from the Federal government.

I'm a long way from being sold on Barr, but he claims to be against any Federal marriage act, against the war on drugs, and for civil liberties and a free economy -- whatever his positions in the past.

The guy

The guy is Bob Barr - look at his track record; nothing less than a socially conservative socialist.

It is as though in the GOP candidacy (he is originally a GOP congressman) is simply, "Love guns?", "hate gays?", "You believe Jesus Christ?", say yes to all three and you're a shoe in.

Big-government Republicans

Mario's picture

You're not wrong about the Republican "borrow and spend" strategy. The Democratic "tax and spend" if arguably better, is only marginally so. The Democrats would tax all profits until there was no capital left. Of course, the Republicans would inflate all profits through easy credit until there was only illusory capital left.

Rather than "borrow and spend" or "tax and spend," it's a great shame neither seems to have ever heard of "produce and spend." The best part of that plan is government's job is easier, since all it has to do is get out of the way of society's producers. If a free-market were ever allowed, there would be so much wealth created that light taxation of it would bring bucket loads more money than what we have now.

One question though, who is the Libertarian "moron" you're referring to?

There's the problem

Families are taxed rather than individuals. What a stupid policy to begin with.

Good point

Good point Mario, put lets look at the Republicans when they were in control of congress and senate. You either have tax 'n spend in the case of Democrats or borrow and spend in the case of the Republicans.

When the Republicans were in control they spent like drunken sailors and never maintained a balanced budget. Both parties are as guilty as each other - but at least in the case of the democrats they actually *realise* that these things have to be paid for - and it can't be paid for courtesy of the national credit card either.

If the Republicans want any respect at all, they need to firstly make sure that those voted in congress and senate tow the party line; and christ all bloody mighty, make sure you vote someone in who has an IQ above room temperature. Every damn election year in the US I become more and more depressed seeing the 'nobel prize winners' who are paraded on stage by the two major parties. Heck, even the Libertarian's in the US have gotten into on the 'vote a moron as presidential candidate' bandwagon.

"If you're against Bush and his policies . . . "

. . . you might be seen as traitorous Dem-scum.

At least according to the guiding light and Emperor of SOLO. It's a clear choice.

But here's a Washington Post breakdown of the McCain/Obama tax plans. All bets are off, of course, as the toll for the latest proposed debt-coverage by the US could reach far over $1,000,000,000,000.

Irony?!

Mario's picture

I want to be clear at the outset. Obama may very well be a socialist devil. Everything I've heard of his proposed policies and track record backs this up. More socialism is the last thing we need.

That said, the Republicans are the ones who have been going around denouncing anyone who doesn't support the war in Iraq, or strip searches in airports, or so-called free speech zones as "unpatriotic." If you're against Bush and his policies, you're somehow un-american.

The present administration opened this door. When I heard Biden's choice of words, I thought he was being slyly ironic.

"We want to take money..."

At this point in American history and knowing what we know of this idea and what it's wrought in objective fact -- nevermind all the theory that's never really popular in dealing with this and projecting what it actually means in reality before we get to that reality -- every thinking person would take Joe Biden at his words and rack a round into their battle rifle.

No compromise, no discussion.

That's exactly how summarily this should be dismissed. That man just told you exactly what he's about, and he should be taken just that seriously.

That was my remark on this horseshit, yesterday.

This is a bit more accurate:

Callum McPetrie's picture

“It’s time to be patriotic,” Mr. Biden said. “Time to jump in. Time to be part of the deal. Time to help get the Soviet Union out of the rut.”

After all, it was in the Soviet Union when the idea of paying higher taxes became "patriotic"!

It's time to be patriotic.......altruism at its best/worst!!!
Be prepared US folks to open your wallets and shake out every dime,

How much money your country can take from you!

Luke H's picture

"Think not what you can do for your country, but how much money your country can take from you!"

Despicable.

The cheering and clapping sent a shiver down my spine.  So many people are champing at the bit to take others money, not to mention freedoms.

Indeed Jody

Why should the rich have all the fun? Why should the middle and lower classes be deprived of the opportunity to be patriotic? What's the bet that they won't be if Obama bin Biden are elected? Wink

Well, well, well ...

Lindsay Perigo's picture

Coincidentally, just when the treasonous Obama bin Biden duo are delivering lectures about patriotism, we hear that another treasonous duo, two of the Left's pin-up martyrs were indeed guilty as charged.

Newt Gingrich had a good

Jody Gomez's picture

Newt Gingrich had a good take on this. He brought up the fact that it's funny that Biden only thinks certain Americans should be patriotic...i.e. those who make more than 250,000 a year.
